What is Arishta?
Arishta (literally "danger" or "affliction") refers to yogas that promise harm: early death, illness, loss, separation, or failure. BPHS Ch. 34 details the main Arishtas. Examples: Balarishtа (threat to infant survival), Marakas (planets that cause death in their dasha), Yogakaraka (planet canceling other yogas).
An Arishta is not a death sentence. It describes a threat that can be mitigated by strength elsewhere in the chart or by the grace of the spiritual path. This is where Bhanga (cancellation rules) matter most.
Identifying Arishtas
Balarishtа (Infant/Child Mortality):
- Weak Moon in a malefic house (6, 8, 12)
- Moon conjunct or aspected by malefics without benefic protection
- 8th lord weak in a malefic sign
Marakas (Death-Causing): The 2nd and 7th lords are Marakas. Their dasha is considered dangerous, especially if conjunct malefics or in the 8th. Timing death by dasha is complex, but classically Marakas in their own dasha (or a Saturn transition) trigger major life events including death in weak charts.
Graharaja (Planetary War): When two planets occupy nearly the same degree, one "defeats" the other. The defeated planet loses strength and may cause arishta related to its house/sign.
Bhanga: Cancellation Conditions
An Arishta is canceled (bhanga) if:
- The afflicting planet is weak. A debilitated Saturn in the 8th loses much power to harm.
- A benefic counteracts. Jupiter strong in the chart protects against most arishtas. Venus aspecting an afflicted house mitigates marital arishta.
- The Lagna lord is strong. A powerful Lagna lord (Ascendant lord) is a universal protector. Its strength reduces the severity of any arishta.
- The house lord is strong. If the 8th lord is exalted or in own sign despite being a malefic, the 8th house arishta is canceled.
- Parivartana Yoga (exchange). If two planets exchange signs, their lords are activated. This can cancel arishtas formed by those planets.
Worked Example: Balarishta Cancellation
Chart: Moon in 8th Scorpio (appears weak), BUT Moon exalted in Taurus D9, AND Jupiter in 1st exalted
Initial reading: Moon in 8th suggests Balarishtа (child mortality).
BUT: Moon exalted in D9 (strong roots), and Lagna lord Jupiter powerful.
Verdict: Balarishta is present structurally but canceled by dignity of Moon in D9 and strength of Lagna lord. Child is likely safe.
⚠️ Honesty About Arishtas
Many popular astrology books exaggerate arishta severity. Statements like "Moon in 8th = death in childhood" are false fear-mongering. Classical texts give the base principle, but always with cancellation and mitigation conditions. A student must:
- Identify the arishta structure
- Check all cancellation conditions rigorously
- Assess actual strength (Shadbala, Vimshopaka) of the afflicting planet and the protecting planets
- Never declare doom without this full analysis
Arishta predictions are for reference, not fear. They alert the astrologer to watch certain transits or dashas closely, but they do not justify alarming the querent.
