The Step-by-Step Method
A complete chart reading proceeds in layers. Skip steps and you will miss crucial factors or make contradictory claims.
- Verify the chart. Check the birth time, date, and location for accuracy. If time is unknown, use sunrise or noon and note the limitation. Bad data = bad reading.
- Ascendant and Lagna lord. The Lagna is the foundation. Is the Lagna lord strong? In what house? What dasha is it in? The Lagna lord's position colors the entire chart.
- The triad: Sun, Moon, Ascendant. These three define the person's core. Sun = will and identity. Moon = emotions and response. Lagna = how the world sees you. Are they in agreement (harmonious) or conflict (complex)?
- House lordships. For each house of interest (marriage = 7th, career = 10th, wealth = 2nd), identify the lord, its sign, its house placement, its aspects. Is it strong? Afflicted?
- Planetary strengths (Shadbala, Vimshopaka). Which planets are strong and which weak? Weak planets cannot deliver results even in good houses. Strong planets in weak houses still show some ability.
- Yogas. Scan for Raja Yogas, Parivartana Yogas, Dhana Yogas. These are promises, not guarantees. Verify that the planets involved are reasonably dignified.
- Afflictions and Arishtas. Check for weak Lagna, weak 8th, Marakas, Balarishtа, dosha combinations. Then check cancellations (Bhanga).
- Divisional charts. Check D9 (dharma and marriage), D10 (career), D7 (children), D12 (parents/inheritance). Are the themes consistent with D1 or contradictory?
- Dasha periods and transits. When will promised results manifest? Use dasha to find the timing. Use transits to refine the month/week. Use Ashtakavarga to identify strong transit periods.
- The overall narrative. Step back. Does the chart tell a coherent story? Do all the pieces fit? If there are contradictions, resolve them by checking dignity, Bhanga, or divisional charts.
Reading the Lagna Lord First
The Lagna lord is your entry point. Its condition determines the native's capacity to manifest any yoga or promise. A weak Lagna lord in a weak house means the native struggles with initiative, self-confidence, or ability to seize opportunities.
Example: Mars Lagna (Aries), Mars at 2° Scorpio (debilitated, 8th house). Mars is the Lagna lord and it is in a weak state. No matter how many Rajayogas appear elsewhere, this native will struggle with self-assertion, courage, and action. The chart's promises are muted by this core weakness.
Conversely, a strong Lagna lord in a strong house (exalted, or in a Kendra, or aspected by Jupiter) acts as a universal amplifier. Good yogas become very good. Challenges are surmountable.
Resolving Contradictions
A chart often appears contradictory at first glance:
- "Strong 10th lord but debilitated in D10?" → The 10th lord is keen to work (D1), but success comes through struggle (D10 weakness). Career rises late.
- "Jupiter strong in 7th but Saturn aspecting?" → Marriage will occur (Jupiter in 7th is clear), but with restrictions or delays (Saturn's aspect). Spouse may be older or from a different background.
- "High Ashtakavarga in Gemini but Mars transits next?" → Mars through a strong sign is less harmful than usual. Problems still arise but are handled well.
Contradiction is not error; it is nuance. The chart is not "all good" or "all bad"; it is a texture. Your job is to read the texture accurately.
