The 360° zodiac is divided into 249 successive sub-lord arcs. Why 249? Because the 27 nakshatras × 9 sub-periods per nakshatra = 243 basic sub-arcs, plus refinements and rounding adjustments give ~249 (the exact number varies by source and calculation method).
The sequence is deterministic: Starting at 0° Aries and moving forward, each planet's sub-period lasts a proportional time based on Vimshottari years (Ketu 7 years = shortest arc, Venus 20 years = longest arc, etc.). The planets cycle repeatedly: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, ... across all 360°.
Key insight: Any planetary or cusp position can be resolved to its sub-lord by consulting the 249-arc lookup table. A planet at 7°15' is in one specific sub-lord arc; a cusp at 18°42' is in another. The sub-lord determines the meaning.
Practical use: In horary astrology, the 1-249 system (see later lesson) maps a seed number directly to a specific sub-lord arc, deriving an ascendant for the horary chart. The 249-arc map is the foundation of this system.
Memorization: You do NOT need to memorize all 249 arcs. The calculator provides a lookup function. But understanding that 249 discrete, ordered sub-lord arcs exist and that they tile the entire zodiac is the conceptual foundation of KP.
