The 360° zodiac is divided into 249 successive sub-lord arcs. Why 249? Because the 27 nakshatras × 9 sub-periods per nakshatra = 243 basic sub-arcs, plus refinements and rounding adjustments give ~249 (the exact number varies by source and calculation method).
The sequence is deterministic: Starting at 0° Aries and moving forward, each planet's sub-period lasts a proportional time based on Vimshottari years (Ketu 7 years = shortest arc, Venus 20 years = longest arc, etc.). The planets cycle repeatedly: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, ... across all 360°.
Key insight: Any planetary or cusp position can be resolved to its sub-lord by consulting the 249-arc lookup table. A planet at 7°15' is in one specific sub-lord arc; a cusp at 18°42' is in another. The sub-lord determines the meaning.
Practical use: In horary astrology, the 1-249 system (see later lesson) maps a seed number directly to a specific sub-lord arc, deriving an ascendant for the horary chart. The 249-arc map is the foundation of this system.
Memorization: You do NOT need to memorize all 249 arcs. The calculator provides a lookup function. But understanding that 249 discrete, ordered sub-lord arcs exist and that they tile the entire zodiac is the conceptual foundation of KP.
The lesson displays the 249-arc table (or excerpts) and teaches how to use it to resolve any degree to its sub-lord. You will practice resolving your natal planets and cusps to their sub-lords, building familiarity with the system.
Where 249 comes from. Twenty-seven nakshatras, each divided into nine subs, gives 243 subdivisions. The figure of 249 arises because the divisions are counted across sign boundaries as well: a sub that straddles two signs is counted separately in each, producing 249 distinct arcs across the zodiac. Each arc carries a unique signature of sign lord, star lord and sub-lord.
Why the map is useful. Once the zodiac is divided this way, any longitude resolves immediately to a three-lord signature. The table is what makes KP practical: rather than recomputing subdivisions for every planet, the practitioner reads the signature straight off the map.
The link to horary. The same 249 arcs supply the horary system. When a querent picks a number between 1 and 249, that number selects an arc, and the arc becomes the ascendant of the horary chart. The number system and the sub-lord map are therefore the same structure viewed from two directions.
Boundary discipline. A planet within a few arc-minutes of a sub boundary should be flagged, not read confidently. This is where ayanamsa choice, birth-time accuracy and software differences all bite at once. Marking such placements as uncertain is a sign of competence, not indecision.
