The 9-Fold Division
Navamsha (D9) divides each sign into 9 equal portions of 3°20' each. This is precise: 30° / 9 = 3° 20' = 3.333...°
Navamsha always starts at Aries. The first 3°20' of Aries (in D1) becomes Aries in Navamsha. The next 3°20' becomes Taurus in Navamsha. And so on.
Calculation Rules
Step-by-Step Formula
- Get the planet's longitude in its sign (0° to 30°)
- Divide by 3.333° (which is 30/9)
- Floor the result to get the division index (0–8)
- Add that index to Aries (sign 1) to get the Navamsha sign
Worked Example: Mars at 24.8° (Capricorn 24.8°)
24.8° / 3.333° = 7.44
floor(7.44) = 7
Aries (1) + 7 = 8 (Scorpio)
Mars at 24.8° Capricorn → Scorpio Navamsha
The degree within the Navamsha sign: We take 24.8° and find where it sits within its 3.333° band.
24.8° mod 3.333° = 1.8°. So Mars is at 1.8° Scorpio in Navamsha.
Reading the Navamsha Chart
Navamsha Lagna
The ascendant's Navamsha sign is Navamsha Lagna. This is crucial. If your D1 ascendant is 8° Gemini, it falls in the first division of Gemini, so D9 Lagna is Aries.
A strong Navamsha Lagna lord indicates spiritual stability and dharmic alignment.
Vargottama
If a planet occupies the same sign in D1 and D9, it is Vargottama (same varga). This is powerful strength.
Example: Venus at 12° Libra in D1 → Libra in D9 → Vargottama Venus.
When reading Navamsha for marriage: look at Venus (wife for male, marriage prospect generally), Jupiter (husband for female), the 7th lord, and the 7th house of Navamsha. A benefic in the 7th of Navamsha promises harmonious partnership. Malefics suggest delays or struggle.
Navamsha in Prediction
Many astrologers treat D9 almost as a second birth chart. This is pragmatically useful but theoretically wrong. D9 is not meant to replace D1; it refines D1. A planet weak in D1 but strong in D9 will show qualified results: the potential is there, but the will or capacity to manifest it is compromised.
Marriage Prediction
D1: Whether marriage occurs, when, and its necessity in your life path. D9: Quality of the relationship, spouse's character, spiritual compatibility, children born into the marriage.
