The 12 Bhavas (Houses) and Their Meanings
Each house governs a specific life domain. Classical texts (BPHS, Jataka Bharatiya) list multiple meanings per house. This lesson covers the primary and secondary meanings, which apply whether you use whole-sign or Bhava Chalit houses.
1st House (Lagna)
Self, personality, health, appearance, life direction, physical body. The Lagna is the most important house—it is the native. Its lord rules the entire chart's foundation.
2nd House
Wealth, speech, family, nourishment, right eye. The second house carries the native's earning power and reserves. Speech (vac) includes communication and expression.
3rd House
Siblings, courage, short journeys, communication, writing, hands, ears. The 3rd is the house of will and effort. Planets here show how the native takes initiative.
4th House
Mother, home, property, vehicles, happiness, heart, land, education. The 4th is one of the four kendra (angle) houses and carries inner peace and roots.
5th House
Children, creativity, intelligence, romance, speculation, past-life karma. The 5th is a trikona (trinal) house of luck and talent. It shows the fruits of past actions.
6th House
Enemies, debts, disease, service, maternal uncles, competitions. The 6th is a dusthana (difficult) house. Planets here must work hard to produce results.
7th House
Spouse, partnerships, public image, marriage, contracts, the 'other'. The 7th is opposite the Lagna. It rules all one-to-one relationships and how others see you.
8th House
Longevity, sudden events, inheritance, occult, spouse's wealth, sexual union, secrets. The 8th is also a dusthana. It rules transformation, crisis, and the hidden.
9th House
Father, dharma (righteousness), long journeys, higher learning, philosophy, luck, pilgrimage. The 9th is a trikona (fortunate) house. It shows the native's spiritual path and fortune.
10th House
Career, profession, public recognition, government, authority, actions, karma. The 10th is the kendra of career and public life. Its lord is critical for professional direction.
11th House
Gains, income, friendships, elder siblings, aspirations, groups, wishes. The 11th is the house of accumulation and dreams. Planets here show how wealth and friendships flow in.
12th House
Losses, expenses, isolation, liberation, foreign lands, hospitals, spouse's relatives, undoing. The 12th is a dusthana. Yet it also rules spiritual release (moksha) and the subconscious.
Kendra, Trikona, and Dusthana Houses
Classical texts classify houses into three types, which affects how planets produce results:
Kendra (Angular) Houses: 1, 4, 7, 10
These are the four cardinal points. Planets here gain strength (yogada — giving yoga). A strong planet in a kendra is one of the best placements.
Trikona (Trinal) Houses: 1, 5, 9
These houses carry dharma (righteous action) and luck. Planets here work smoothly and give fruits. The 1st is both a kendra and trikona (doubly auspicious).
Dusthana (Difficult) Houses: 6, 8, 12
These houses require effort. Planets here must struggle but can produce transformation. Malefics in dusthana are often favourable because their harmful nature is directed at difficulty, not blessing.
House Lord vs Planets in the House
Every house has two meanings:
House Lord (Adhipati)
The planet that rules the sign of the house. It carries the signification of the house globally and shows the quality of that house's outcomes.
Planets in the House
Planets occupying the house modify its meaning. A benefic in a house strengthens it; a malefic challenges it.
