Vargottama: Same Varga Strength
A planet in the same sign in D1, D9, D10, D12, and/or D60 is Vargottama in that varga. Vargottama is a mark of unambiguous strength. BPHS treats it seriously.
Example: Mercury at 14° Virgo in D1. 14° / 3.333° = 4.2, floor = 4, Aries + 4 = Virgo D9. Mercury is Vargottama (Virgo in both D1 and D9).
Vargottama is most powerful in D1-D9 (rashi and navamsha). A planet Vargottama in D10 shows career stability. In D12, ancestral continuity.
Vimshopaka Bala: The 20-Point System
BPHS Ch. 13 introduces Vimshopaka Bala: a weighted strength calculation across 20 vargas. A planet's total strength is the sum of its strength in D1, D2, D3, D4, D7, D9, D10, D12, D16, D20, D24, D27, D30, D40, D45, D60, and others (depending on text). Each varga contributes 1 point if the planet is well-placed in that varga (owned or exalted or Vargottama).
Scoring Rule (simplified standard):
- Exalted in varga: 1 point
- Own sign in varga: 1 point
- Vargottama (same sign as D1): 1 point (some texts: 2 points)
- Friend's sign or Moolatrikona: 0.5 point (varies by school)
- Enemy's sign or debilitated: 0 points
A Vimshopaka total of 15/20 or above is very strong. 10–15 is moderate. Below 10 is weak.
Worked Example: Jupiter
Jupiter at 8° Sagittarius (own sign in D1)
- D1: Own sign → 1 point
- D9 (Navamsha): Lands in Aries (friendly sign) → 0.5 point
- D10 (Dashamsha): Lands in Taurus (friend's sign) → 0.5 point
- D12 (Dwadashamsha): Lands in Gemini (neutral) → 0 points
- D7, D16, D20, D24, D27, D30, D40, D45, D60: Assume mix of own/friend/neutral → ~4 points total
Estimated total: ~6 points. Below average; Jupiter is weak despite owning Sagittarius.
Using Vimshopaka in Reading
A planet's Vimshopaka score tells you its capacity to deliver results. A strong Mars (Vimshopaka 15+) in a trine indicates courage and quick success. Weak Mars (Vimshopaka 6) in a trine shows initiative stalled by self-doubt or lack of physical capacity.
Vimshopaka is not used to override D1 reading. Rather, it scales intensity. A strong benefic becomes more benefic; a weak malefic becomes less harmful.
Limitation
Vimshopaka is computation-heavy and not all astrologers have memorized the 20-varga scoring tables. Many texts give simplified tables or omit some vargas. If you see a Vimshopaka calculation, check the source's definition of "20 vargas"—schools differ.
