The Four Tiers of Planetary Dignity
Every planet has a set of 'good' and 'bad' zones in the zodiac. These are fixed by classical rule and do not change. They are the most basic measure of planetary strength.
Own Sign (Sva Rashi)
When a planet sits in its own sign, it is naturally at home. It expresses itself openly and powerfully. Mars in Aries, Venus in Taurus, Mercury in Gemini or Virgo—all are strong.
Strength factor: High dignity. The planet works well.
Moolatrikona (Root Triangle)
Moolatrikona is a partial zone within each planet's own sign—the 'root' of its power. Only part of the sign grants this status:

Strength factor: Very high dignity. Moolatrikona is stronger than own sign in the weakened degrees outside moolatrikona.
Exaltation (Uchcha)
Exaltation is the sign where a planet achieves its maximum power, regardless of lordship. A planet in exaltation can overcome obstacles and act favorably even if other factors are weak.

Strength factor: Very high dignity. A planet within 1–2° of its highest point is maximally powerful.
Debilitation (Neecha)
Debilitation is the opposite of exaltation. A planet in this sign loses power and may act destructively, even if other factors support it. However, it is not hopeless: neecha bhanga (cancellation) rules can reverse the weakness.

Strength factor: Low dignity. The planet struggles and may cause problems. However, neecha bhanga rules often apply (see Lesson 20).
Worked Example
Venus at 26° Pisces (exalted zone)
Check: Venus's exaltation sign is Pisces, highest point 27°.
Calculation: 26° is within 1° of the highest point → exalted (very high dignity).
Result: Venus brings strong love, beauty, and relationship energy. Even if other factors are weak, Venus helps.
Mars at 28° Cancer (debilitated zone)
Check: Mars's debilitation sign is Cancer, lowest point 28°.
Calculation: 28° is at the exact lowest point → deeply debilitated.
Result: Mars is weak, confused, lacks clarity. Energy is scattered or misdirected. Check neecha bhanga rules to see if it is cancelled.
