The 1-249 system is unique to KP horary. Here is how it works:
Step 1: Obtain a seed number. This can be: (a) derived from the moment of judgment (hour + minute + second mod 249), (b) provided by the querent randomly, (c) derived from the question's wording, or (d) from the time the astrologer receives the question. Different schools use different methods.
Step 2: Map the number to the 249-arc table. Number 1 = 0° Aries (Ashwini Ketu sub-lord arc start). Number 2 ≈ 0°54' Aries (Ashwini Venus sub-lord arc start). Number 249 = last sub-lord arc before 360°. Each number corresponds to one specific sub-lord arc's start degree.
Step 3: Use that degree as the horary ascendant. Compute the full horary chart (planets, houses, aspects) for the moment of judgment, with this ascendant and the birth location's coordinates.
Step 4: Read the horary chart using KP significator rules (4-step, cuspal sub-lords, untenanted planets) to answer the question.
Precision: The 1-249 system is precise only if the seed number is truly random or derived correctly. If the astrologer manipulates the number to get a desired answer, the accuracy collapses. Horary works best when the astrologer has no investment in a particular answer.
Example: Client asks "Will I get this job?" at 2:34 PM on 18 Sep 2026 in London. Seed number is derived from the current moment. Horary chart is computed with the ascendant degree corresponding to that seed number. The 10th house cuspal sub-lord is examined: if benefic for career (Venus, Jupiter, or unafflicted Sun), answer is YES. If malefic (Saturn, Mars), answer is NO. Timing is derived from dasha and transit of the significators.
The calculator maps any 1-249 number to its sub-lord arc and computes the horary chart. You will practice the 1-249 system on sample questions and observe the accuracy of the significator-based answers.
Why a number at all. In a natal chart the ascendant comes from the birth time. A horary chart has no birth, so something must supply the ascendant. KP horary takes it from a number the querent chooses, which maps onto one of the 249 sub-lord arcs and fixes the ascendant of the chart.
The mechanics. The querent names a number between 1 and 249. That number identifies an arc with its own sign, star and sub lords. The arc becomes the ascendant, and the rest of the chart is cast for the moment and place of the question. From there the reading proceeds as any KP reading does.
The conditions that make it valid. The number must be chosen spontaneously, without coaching, and the question asked once and in earnest. A number supplied after discussion of what different numbers mean is no longer the querent's own moment. Asking the same question repeatedly until a favourable chart appears destroys the method entirely.
Recording the moment. The time and place used are those of the question, not of the astrologer's convenience in casting it later. Note both accurately, including the time zone, at the moment the question is received. Reconstructing the moment afterwards from memory introduces exactly the error the method is most sensitive to.
