The 1-249 system is unique to KP horary. Here is how it works:
Step 1: Obtain a seed number. This can be: (a) derived from the moment of judgment (hour + minute + second mod 249), (b) provided by the querent randomly, (c) derived from the question's wording, or (d) from the time the astrologer receives the question. Different schools use different methods.
Step 2: Map the number to the 249-arc table. Number 1 = 0° Aries (Ashwini Ketu sub-lord arc start). Number 2 ≈ 0°54' Aries (Ashwini Venus sub-lord arc start). Number 249 = last sub-lord arc before 360°. Each number corresponds to one specific sub-lord arc's start degree.
Step 3: Use that degree as the horary ascendant. Compute the full horary chart (planets, houses, aspects) for the moment of judgment, with this ascendant and the birth location's coordinates.
Step 4: Read the horary chart using KP significator rules (4-step, cuspal sub-lords, untenanted planets) to answer the question.
Precision: The 1-249 system is precise only if the seed number is truly random or derived correctly. If the astrologer manipulates the number to get a desired answer, the accuracy collapses. Horary works best when the astrologer has no investment in a particular answer.
Example: Client asks "Will I get this job?" at 2:34 PM on 18 Sep 2026 in London. Seed number is derived from the current moment. Horary chart is computed with the ascendant degree corresponding to that seed number. The 10th house cuspal sub-lord is examined: if benefic for career (Venus, Jupiter, or unafflicted Sun), answer is YES. If malefic (Saturn, Mars), answer is NO. Timing is derived from dasha and transit of the significators.
