What is Ashtakavarga?
Ashtakavarga (literally "eight-fold division") is a system that assigns benefic and malefic points (bindus and rekhas) to each sign based on planetary positions. It refines transit predictions by showing which signs are strengthened (bindus) or weakened (rekhas) by the planets.
The "eight" refers to 7 planets (Sun through Saturn) plus the Lagna. Each contributes bindus to certain houses/signs according to rules. A high bindu count in a sign means transits through that sign are smoother; low bindus indicate rougher periods.
Calculating Ashtakavarga Bindus
Each planet (and Lagna) contributes bindus to specific signs based on a standardized table. BPHS Ch. 45 provides the tables. The process is mechanical:
- For each planet, consult its bindu table (e.g., Sun's table).
- The table shows which houses/signs receive a bindu from this planet's current position.
- Mark a bindu in each eligible sign.
- Repeat for all 8 entities (7 planets + Lagna).
- Sum bindus per sign: maximum 8, minimum 0.
Simplified Example
Sun at 10° Aries. Consult Sun's bindu table: Sun contributes bindus to houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 from its position.
From Aries (sign 1): Count 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 = signs 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11.
Mark 1 bindu in each of those signs. Repeat for Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Lagna.
Result: Each sign gets 0–8 bindus.
Standard interpretation:
- 6–8 bindus: Excellent. Transits here are smooth and beneficial.
- 4–5 bindus: Moderate. Mixed results; requires effort to succeed.
- 2–3 bindus: Weak. Obstacles; caution advised during transits here.
- 0–1 bindus: Very weak. Major challenges; best to avoid important actions.
Ashtakavarga in Transit Prediction
Application: When a planet transits a sign, check that sign's bindu total. A benefic planet transiting a high-bindu sign reinforces success. The same planet in a low-bindu sign faces obstacles.
Example: Jupiter transits Virgo next month. Your Virgo has 7 bindus (strong). Jupiter in Virgo with 7 bindus is auspicious; expect good outcomes in areas ruled by Jupiter and Virgo (finance, marriage, learning). If Virgo had only 2 bindus, Jupiter's benefit would be muted or delayed.
Timing with Ashtakavarga: Astrologers use Ashtakavarga to pick auspicious dates. Avoid starting projects when the transiting planet is in a low-bindu sign. Act when it's in a high-bindu sign and aspected by benefics.
⚠️ Ashtakavarga Complexity
Ashtakavarga calculations are intricate and error-prone by hand. Different texts give slightly different bindu tables (BPHS vs. Phaladeepika vs. Saravali). Modern software handles it reliably. If you calculate by hand, verify your bindu count by checking a reference text's tables exactly.
