Three Independent Coordinate Systems
Parashari Jyotish does not have one coordinate system; it has three, and learners must master all three:
Rashi (Sign)
The zodiacal belt divided into 12 equal signs, each 30°. Counted continuously from Aries (0°) to Pisces (330°). Independent of when the native was born.
Bhava (House)
The sky divided into 12 unequal sectors by the Ascendant and MC. Birth-time and location dependent. Counts from Lagna (1st house) to 12th.
Graha (Planet)
The nine luminaries and nodes. Each has a longitude (rashi placement) and a house (bhava placement). Grahas are the actors; rashi and bhava are stages.
Example: A Single Planet, Three Frames
Let's say Mars is at 127.3° longitude in your birth chart (whole-sign houses):
Rashi (Sign): 127.3° ÷ 30 = Bhava 4, remainder 17.3° → Mars in Leo (4th sign)
Bhava (House): Whole-sign: if your Lagna is at 45° (Taurus), then 1st house covers 45–75°. Mars at 127.3° falls in 3rd house (105–135°).
Graha (Planet): Mars is Mars (the principle of energy, conflict, courage)
Result: Mars in Leo, 3rd house (if Lagna is Taurus). Mars behaves as a Leo-principle in a 3rd-house context.
Why This Matters: The Overlay
In a Parashari reading, you must track all three simultaneously:
- Rashi tells you: Mars's intrinsic dignity (Leo is Mars's own sign → high dignity) and its relationship to sign-lords
- Bhava tells you: The life area Mars signifies (3rd house = siblings, communication, short journeys)
- Graha tells you: How Mars acts (aggressive, passionate, sports-oriented)
Whole-Sign vs Bhava Chalit
Classical texts (BPHS) do not specify a single house system. Modern Parashari practice uses two:
Whole-Sign (Rashi Chalit)
Each house = one complete sign (30°). Simple, sign-based. Used for initial house placement.
Bhava Chalit
Houses defined by cusps (Placidus trisection). More precise for weak houses (sandhi), but requires calculation.
This course teaches both. Lesson 8 covers their mathematical difference and when to use each.
