Shadbala: The Six Sources of Planetary Strength
Shadbala is a comprehensive system for measuring planetary strength. It combines six types of strength (bala) into one score. The BPHS outlines this extensively, though the mathematics are terse and require interpretation by later commentators.
The Six Balas
1. Sthana Bala (Positional Strength)
Based on a planet's position: own sign, moolatrikona, exaltation, friend's sign, etc. Maximum score shows dignity.
2. Dig Bala (Directional Strength)
Some planets are stronger in certain houses: Jupiter/Moon in the 1st house (east), Mars in the 10th (south), Mercury in the ascendant (east), Saturn in the 7th (west), Venus in the 4th (north), Sun in the 10th (south).
3. Kala Bala (Temporal Strength)
Based on time: day/night (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Saturn stronger by day; Venus, Jupiter stronger by night), retrograde status, and zodiacal position.
4. Chesta Bala (Motional Strength)
Based on a planet's motion and retrograde status. Retrograde planets are often weaker (though exceptions exist). Direct planets gain chesta bala.
5. Naisargika Bala (Natural Strength)
Inherent strength: Sun and Jupiter are naturally strong; Saturn and Mars are naturally weak. Mercury is neutral. This is simple and never changes.
6. Pakshabala (Lunar Phase Strength)
Moon's phase: planets are stronger in the waxing Moon (Shukla Paksha, 1st to 15th lunar day). Sun, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury are waxing; Saturn, Venus are waning.
Calculating Shadbala: Practical Method
The full mathematical formula in the BPHS is complex and uses specific point systems. For practical interpretation, most modern students use software. However, here is the conceptual method:
Step 1: Assign each bala a score (typically 0–60 or 0–100, depending on the system).
Step 2: Add all six scores.
Step 3: Normalize to a percentage or compare to planet's maximum theoretical strength.
Example: If a planet's six balas total 240 out of 360 points, its Shadbala is 240/360 = 66.7%.
Interpreting Shadbala Strength
- Strong Planet (80%+): Clear, decisive results. The planet can overcome obstacles and produce favourable outcomes even if other factors are weak.
- Moderate Planet (50–79%): Variable results. Depends on other factors (house, aspects, conjunctions). The planet can work but is not assured.
- Weak Planet (<50%): Struggle, delay, or inability to produce results. The planet's significations are blocked or distorted.
Worked Example: Jupiter in Scorpio at 1 PM (Day), Waxing Moon Phase
Setup: Jupiter in Scorpio (sign ruled by Mars), born at 1 PM, Moon is in Shukla Paksha (waxing).
Sthana Bala: Jupiter is in Scorpio (not own sign, not exalted). Mars is a friend. Score: Medium (friend's sign).
Dig Bala: Jupiter is naturally strong in the 1st house or in the ascendant direction (east). If in 1st, high score; if in 7th (opposite), low score.
Kala Bala: Jupiter is a day planet. Birth at 1 PM (noon time) → gain (day birth). Shukla Paksha is waxing → Jupiter strengthened (Jupiter is a waxing planet). Score: High.
Chesta Bala: Check if retrograde. If direct, gain; if retrograde, penalty.
Naisargika Bala: Jupiter is naturally strong. Fixed high score.
Pakshabala: Shukla Paksha (waxing) strengthens Jupiter. Score: High.
Result: Jupiter here has medium-to-high overall Shadbala due to strong kala, naisargika, and paksha balas, but moderate sthana bala (not own sign). Overall assessment: Moderately strong, capable of producing results with effort.
