Planetary Friendship (Mitrata)
Planets are not isolated. They relate to each other as friends, enemies, or neutrals. This relationship affects how one planet's results are modified by another's proximity or aspect. Friendship has three layers: natural (fixed), temporal (variable), and compound (combined).
Natural Friendship (Naisargika Mitrata)
Natural friendship is fixed by classical rule and does not change. It is based on the lordship pattern and mutual rulership:

Temporal Friendship (Kaalaja Mitrata)
Temporal friendship depends on house rulership in the natal chart. Two planets are temporal friends if they rule houses that belong to the same triplicity (fire, earth, air, water) or if they are lords of kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) or trikona (1, 5, 9) to each other.
Key rule: In each native's chart, check which houses the planets lord and apply the triplicity rule or kendra-trikona logic. This is chart-specific, unlike natural friendship.
Compound Friendship (Chaaya Mitrata)
Compound friendship is the result of combining natural and temporal. If two planets are natural friends AND temporal friends, they are very strong allies. If they are natural enemies but temporal friends, the effect is nuanced; temporal friendship can reduce enmity.
Rules for Compound Friendship:
- 1. Friend + Friend = Strong Support → Results are harmonious
- 2. Friend + Enemy = Complicated → Temporal can ease natural enmity
- 3. Friend + Neutral = Mild Support → Works smoothly
- 4. Enemy + Enemy = Strong Conflict → Results are blocked or delayed
- 5. Neutral + Neutral = No Special Interaction → Each acts independently
Worked Example: Friendship in a Taurus Lagna Chart
Chart Setup: Taurus Lagna (Venus-ruled), Jupiter in 5th house (Leo), Saturn in 7th house (Libra)
Step 1: Natural Friendship
Jupiter and Saturn are natural enemies (Jupiter rules fire/expansive signs, Saturn rules air/contract signs).
Step 2: Temporal Friendship
Jupiter lords Leo (5th house, a trikona). Saturn lords Libra (7th house, a kendra). Jupiter (trikona lord) and Saturn (kendra lord) are temporal friends (kendra-trikona relationship is supportive).
Step 3: Compound Friendship
Natural enemies + Temporal friends = Jupiter and Saturn's natural enmity is reduced. They work together despite tension, especially for 7th-house (marriage/partnership) outcomes.
Result: Jupiter's benefic 5th-house placement (children, creativity) gets Saturn's discipline and timing. The conjunction or aspect is complex but workable, not purely malefic.
