Why Divisional Charts Exist
The Rashi chart (D1) shows planetary positions in the main zodiac. But a planet's influence operates at multiple scales. A planet in Leo in D1 tells us its role in identity and life direction. The same planet in D9 tells us about marriage and partnership. D10 shows career. D7 shows children. Each divisional chart is a lens focusing on one life domain.
BPHS Chapter 6 introduces the concept: the zodiac of 360° can be divided into 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 12, etc. parts. Each division reveals a different stratum of existence. This is not a metaphor—classical texts treat vargas as absolute. A planet weak in D1 but strong in D9 (Navamsha) is strong for marriage.
The Math of Division
The Core Formula
Varga Sign = floor((longitude % 30) / (30/n)) + 1
Where n = number of divisions (9 for Navamsha, 10 for Dashamsha, etc.)
Example: Sun at 47.5° (Taurus 17.5°).
- In D9 (Navamsha): 17.5° / (30/9) = 17.5 / 3.333 = 5.25 → floor to 5 + 1 = sign 6 (Virgo)
- In D10 (Dashamsha): 17.5° / (30/10) = 17.5 / 3 = 5.83 → floor to 5 + 1 = sign 6 (Virgo)
The starting sign for each division follows a rule. D1 starts at Aries. D9 always starts at Aries in the first 3.33° of Aries. D10 always starts at Aries in the first 3° of Aries. Some divisions (like D12, D7) follow special starting-sign rules based on sign of lagna.

- D1 (Rashi): Overall life, identity, main events
- D9 (Navamsha): Marriage, dharma, spiritual path
- D10 (Dashamsha): Career, professional reputation
- D12 (Dwadashamsha): Parents, ancestors, inheritance
Secondary Importance
- D7 (Saptamsha): Children, progeny
- D4 (Chaturthamsha): Property, vehicles, comforts
- D2 (Hora): Wealth
- D3, D6, D8: Siblings, enemies, longevity (specialized)
Classical texts differ slightly on emphasis. BPHS prioritizes D1, D9, D12. Later schools add weight to D10. Modern practice leans heavily on D9 (Navamsha); many astrologers read D9 almost like a second birth chart. This is not wrong, but it can obscure the primacy of D1.
The Hierarchy
A planet weak in D1 cannot be rescued by strength in D9. D1 is primary. D9 refines and qualifies. Think of D1 as the trunk of the tree, D9-D12 as the branches that show where and how the trunk's energy expresses.
Common Mistake
Students see a strong Venus in Navamsha and declare "great marriage." But if Venus is debilitated in D1, marriage is threatened. D9 shows the quality of partnership; D1 shows whether partnership occurs at all.
