A shadbala calculation settles a question chart inspection cannot: when two planets both look strong for different reasons, which one actually delivers? Shadbala reduces six separate sources of strength to a single number in rupas, so the comparison becomes arithmetic rather than opinion.
In basic astrology, a planet in its "Exaltation" sign is considered strong, and a planet in "Debilitation" is considered weak. This is a dangerous oversimplification. The Shadbala System is the rigorous mathematical audit of a planet, calculating six distinct sources of energy. A "Debilitated" planet with a massive Shadbala score will out-perform an "Exalted" planet with a low Shadbala score every single time.
1. The Six Pillars of Shadbala
The Rajvidya engine calculates the following six metrics to arrive at a planet's Total Strength (Rupa):
- Sthana Bala (Positional Strength): Based on the planet's sign, division, and house. It shows the "Innate Dignity."
- Dig Bala (Directional Strength): Planets gain specific power in certain directions (e.g., Jupiter/Mercury in the East/1st House, Saturn in the West/7th House). This is the power to aim and hit a target.
- Kaala Bala (Temporal Strength): Based on whether you were born at day or night, and the day of the week. Time either supports or drains a planet's battery.
- Chesta Bala (Motional Strength): Based on the planet's speed. Retrograde planets have extremely high Chesta Bala; they are "Heavy" and "Intense."
- Naisargika Bala (Natural Strength): The innate brightness of the planet (Sun is strongest, Saturn is weakest). This is the "Hardwired" status.
- Drik Bala (Aspectual Strength): The total of all positive and negative glances from other planets. It shows the external "Support System."
2. The "Hard Number" Analysis
Rajvidya converts these six metrics into a single numerical value. By comparing this value against a planet's Minimum Required Strength (Virupa), the engine identifies which sectors of your life are "Under-Powered" and which are "Over-Powered."

3. Remedial Logic: Boosting the Battery
If Shadbala is low, the planet's "Battery" is dead. You cannot simply wear a gemstone to fix it. Rajvidya prescribes Kaala (Time) based remedies. For example, if your Saturn Kaala Bala is low, you must perform duties during Saturnine hours to manually "charge" the planet's temporal power. This is the difference between superstitious astrology and the Rajvidya Engineering approach.
How the Shadbala Calculation Is Read
Each bala is computed in virupas, and sixty virupas make one rupa. The six are summed to give the total, which is then compared against a minimum threshold that differs per planet.
Those thresholds matter as much as the total. The required minimums are Sun 5.0 rupas, Moon 6.0, Mars 5.0, Mercury 7.0, Jupiter 6.5, Venus 5.5 and Saturn 5.0. Mercury is held to the highest standard and Mars and Saturn to the lowest, which is why a raw rupa total says little until it is read against the right threshold.
The ratio is the number to read. A planet at 7.0 rupas is strong if it is Mars (140% of requirement) and merely adequate if it is Mercury (100%). Comparing raw totals across planets is the most common error in reading a Shadbala table.
What Shadbala Does Not Measure
Shadbala measures capacity to act, not the quality of what is delivered. A functional malefic with high Shadbala is a strong planet doing difficult work efficiently - the strength amplifies the difficulty rather than removing it.
It is also blind to house lordship and yoga formation. A planet may be strong in Shadbala terms while ruling the 6th and 8th, and its strength then makes those significations more pronounced. Read Shadbala alongside functional nature and house rulership, never in place of them.
The six balas can also offset one another. A planet can reach an adequate total through positional and directional strength while remaining weak in Cheshta and Naisargika bala. Two planets with identical totals can behave quite differently, so the component breakdown deserves as much attention as the sum.
