The 12 houses in Vedic astrology divide the chart into the domains of life. What follows is what each governs, and the classical groupings that explain why some houses behave so differently from others.
If planets are the actors and signs are the costumes, then the Bhavas (Houses) are the physical stages where the drama of life unfolds. A planet in the 10th house is forced to perform on the public stage of career; that same planet in the 4th house is restricted to the private stage of the home. 1. The 4 Purusharthas: The Purpose of Energy
Vedic science categorizes human desire into four fundamental goals. Every house in your chart belongs to one of these four "Purusharthas." By analyzing which group is dominant, Rajvidya determines your Life-Orientation.
- Dharma (Houses 1, 5, 9): The Path of Righteousness. If these houses dominate, you are driven by duty, ethics, and "doing the right thing." You are a natural teacher, judge, or protector.

2. The Kendra vs. Trikona (The Pillars & The Luck)

3. The Dusthana (The Houses of Shadow)
No forensic audit is complete without looking at the Dusthana Houses (6, 8, 12). These are the "Repair Rooms" of the soul. They rule debt (6), transformation/near-death (8), and loss/liberation (12). 4. Bhava Chalit: The Shift in Reality
A standard chart places a sign in a house. But the Bhava Chalit (House-Shift) chart reveals if a planet has physically moved into an adjacent house due to the latitude of your birth. If a planet looks like it's in the 10th (Career) but the Bhava Chalit shows it's actually in the 9th (Education), your "Career" will actually manifest through "Teaching" or "Research."
What Each of the 12 Houses Signifies
1st body, constitution and temperament. 2nd wealth, speech and family of origin. 3rd younger siblings, courage and skill of hand. 4th mother, home, land and emotional security. 5th children, intelligence and creative or speculative activity. 6th illness, debt, enemies and daily work. 7th spouse, partnership and open dealings. 8th longevity, sudden events and inheritance. 9th father, guru, higher learning and fortune. 10th career, public standing and authority. 11th gains, income and networks. 12th loss, expenditure, foreign lands and liberation.
The Groupings That Explain House Behaviour
Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) are the angular houses, the pillars of the chart. Planets here gain the capacity to act visibly. Trikona (1, 5, 9) are the trines, associated with fortune and dharma, and considered the most benefic. The 1st belongs to both, which is why it is the strongest house in the chart.
Dusthana (6, 8, 12) are the houses of difficulty. Planets placed here generally struggle to deliver ordinary results, though these houses also govern medicine, research and spiritual practice, so the difficulty is domain-specific rather than absolute.
Upachaya (3, 6, 10, 11) are the growing houses, where results improve over time. Malefics often perform well here, since the struggle these houses represent is one malefics are equipped for.
Why Two House Systems Give Different Answers
Most Vedic software defaults to whole-sign houses, where the ascendant sign is the entire 1st house. It is simple, and it is what most classical texts assume.
Bhava Chalit calculates houses from the actual cusps, so a planet can sit in one sign but fall into an adjacent house. A planet near a sign boundary can be 10th-house by whole sign and 9th by Chalit, and the two readings say different things.
Neither system is wrong. Check both when a planet sits within a few degrees of a cusp, and weight the reading toward whatever the life history confirms.
