Planetary Conjunctions

Yoga for status and patience but personal loss.

Share

Shad Graha Yoga (specifically the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn conjunction) is a rare and highly significant planetary alignment in Vedic astrology. It occurs when these six specific planets cluster within a single zodiac sign, leaving only Mars and the lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu) outside the conjunction. This yoga is highly dualistic in nature; it signifies a person of immense patience, fortunate circumstances, and high administrative status—often likened to a king's minister—yet it simultaneously portends severe personal sacrifices, including the loss or absence of a spouse, lack of personal wealth, and persistent grief.

How It Forms

The yoga forms when the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn are posited in the same zodiac sign at birth. Because this conjunction involves six of the seven traditional physical planets, it creates an intense concentration of planetary energy in one house of the natal chart.

An important astronomical consequence of this formation is the proximity of five planets to the Sun, which introduces the phenomenon of combustion. According to the Nadi text Kalamsa and Cuspal Interlinks, the specific degrees of proximity to the Sun that trigger combustion are 12 degrees for the Moon, 14 degrees for Mercury, 11 degrees for Jupiter, 10 degrees for Venus, and 16 degrees for Saturn. Consequently, the strength and individual expressions of these planets are heavily modified by their exact longitudinal distance from the Sun.

Furthermore, the house placement of this conjunction dictates whether additional major yogas are triggered. Classical authorities such as the Saravali and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra state that if this six-planet cluster occurs in an angular (Kendra) house (the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house) and any of the non-luminary planets (Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, or Saturn) occupy their own sign or sign of exaltation, they simultaneously form Panchamahapurusha Yogas. For example, if the conjunction is placed in Virgo in the 1st house, Mercury is exalted and forms Bhadra Yoga; if in Libra, Saturn is exalted and forms Sasa Yoga. Such configurations greatly amplify the native's status and greatness.

Classical Effects

Status and Intellectual Qualities

The classical text Saravali states that a native born with the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn in conjunction becomes a minister to a king, is highly fortunate, and is characterized by deep patience. The presence of the great benefics Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury alongside the luminaries provides the intellectual capacity, diplomatic skill, and wisdom required for high-level advisory roles. The native is capable of managing complex state or organizational affairs with a calm, enduring disposition.

The internal temperament of the native is shaped by the planetary gunas. As documented in Scientific Hindu Astrology, the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter are dominated by sattva guna (purity and truth), Mercury and Venus by rajo guna (passion and activity), and Saturn by tamas guna (darkness or restraint). Mercury, however, is highly mutable and adopts the guna of the planets it associates with. In this massive conjunction, Mercury is influenced by all five planets simultaneously, creating a highly complex, adaptive, and multifaceted intellect.

Personal Loss and Grief

Despite the high status and public fortune associated with this yoga, the Saravali explicitly warns that the native will suffer from grief, will have no wife, and will be deprived of wealth. This severe negative indication is a direct result of the extreme concentration of planets in a single house, which can overwhelm the significations of that house. Specifically, the significator of marriage and spouse (Venus) and the significators of wealth (Jupiter and Mercury) are highly likely to be combust or weakened by their close proximity to the Sun.

If this conjunction occurs in the 8th house, the planets involved also dictate the cause of death. The Saravali notes that the Sun signifies death by fire, the Moon by water, Mercury by fever, Jupiter by indigestion, Venus by thirst, and Saturn by hunger. The most afflicted or dominant planet within the 8th house cluster will indicate the specific nature of the native's end.

Strength and Timing

The positive and negative fruits of Shad Graha Yoga manifest primarily during the Mahadashas and Antardashas of the participating planets. The Phaladeepika emphasizes that the effects of any planet's dasha are heavily modified by its strength and whether it is well-placed or adversely posited in the chart.

The timing of these effects can be calculated through different dasha systems. According to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, under the Astottari Dasha system, the dasha durations for the constituent planets are 6 years for the Sun, 15 years for the Moon, 17 years for Mercury, 10 years for Saturn, 19 years for Jupiter, and 21 years for Venus. Under the standard dasha system, the durations are 6 years for the Sun, 21 years for the Moon, 9 years for Mercury, 10 years for Jupiter, 16 years for Venus, and 4 years for Saturn. The natural progression of these periods also follows the Naisargika dasha order (Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Sun, Saturn, and Ascendant) as detailed in the Saravali.

Several factors determine the relative strength of the planets within this conjunction:

  • Dignity and Exaltation: The Vrishabha Vijaya Jyothisha Prakaasham states that a planet's strength, from highest to lowest, is ranked as: exaltation, own house, moolatrikona, friendly house, and debilitation. The Saravali adds that if three or four planets in a chart are exalted, the native becomes a king, and if five or six are exalted, even a person of humble birth becomes a ruler.
  • Positional Strength: The Phaladeepika notes that a planet's strength in a specific house is directly proportional to its proximity to the Bhava madhya (the exact midpoint of the house).
  • Diurnal and Lunar Strength: According to New Techniques of Prediction, the Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn are naturally strong during the day, while the Moon and Venus are strong at night. Furthermore, Shirodaya planets (Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus) are powerful during the day, whereas Pristodaya planets (the Sun and Saturn) are powerful at night. The Roots of Naadi Astrology notes that the benefics (Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus) gain strength during the bright half of the month (Shukla Paksha), whereas the malefics (Sun, Saturn) are stronger during the dark half (Krishna Paksha).
  • Odd and Even Signs: The text Bhava and Graha Balas states that the Sun, Jupiter, Mercury, and Saturn gain 15 Shashtiamsas of strength when posited in odd signs or odd Navamsas, while the Moon and Venus gain 15 Shashtiamsas in even signs or even Navamsas.

Cancellation and Caveats

A major caveat of Shad Graha Yoga is its strong association with renunciation and asceticism. When six planets conjunct in a single sign, the native's focus is drawn away from mundane material pursuits. The Phaladeepika and the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra state that the strongest planet in such a multi-planetary conjunction determines the native's ascetic path. If the Sun is strongest, the native adopts the Vanaprastha (hermit) path; if the Moon, they become a pilgrim; if Mercury, a mendicant; if Jupiter, a follower of Vedanta; if Venus, a hypocritical or insincere ascetic; and if Saturn, an outcaste or extreme ascetic.

Additionally, if any of the participating planets are debilitated, their weakness can be cancelled to form a Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra outlines that if a debilitated planet is placed in a duststhana (the 6th, 8th, or 12th house) and the Lagna lord is strong—either exalted, in its own sign, or aspecting the Lagna—the debility is cancelled, creating a powerful Raja Yoga that brings status and success during its dasha periods. Similarly, if the debilitated planet's dispositor is well-placed in a Kendra or Trikona, the debility is cancelled, mitigating the negative indications of wealth and personal loss.

Variant Readings

The classical traditions draw sharp distinctions between this specific six-planet conjunction and other similar six-planet combinations that include Mars. The Saravali provides the following distinct readings:

  • Inclusion of Mars and Omission of Jupiter: If the conjunction consists of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, and Mars (omitting Jupiter), the native is not a minister but rather a thief, addicted to others' wives, afflicted with leprosy, discarded by relatives, foolish, and childless.
  • Inclusion of Mars and Omission of Saturn: If the conjunction consists of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Mars (omitting Saturn), the native is learned, virtuous, has an emaciated body, is acquainted with many languages, and possesses distinguished knowledge.
  • Inclusion of Mars and Omission of the Sun: If the conjunction consists of the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and Mars (omitting the Sun), the native is pure, valorous, seeks union with many women, is dear to the king, serves as a minister, and is endowed with wealth, children, and happiness.

These variations demonstrate that the presence of Mars completely alters the nature of the six-planet cluster, often replacing the patient, minister-like qualities of the standard Shad Graha Yoga with either extreme valor or severe moral and physical degradation.
