Planetary Conjunctions

Yoga for emotional instability and marital issues.

The Mars-Moon-Saturn-Venus Conjunction, known in Sanskrit as the Chaturgraha Yoga (चतुरग्रह योग), is a planetary conjunction categorized as non-benefic. This combination brings together the emotional and relational significators—the Moon and Venus—with the harsh, separating malefics, Mars and Saturn. Consequently, this yoga primarily signifies emotional instability, pride, and significant marital or relationship issues. The native born under this configuration is often characterized by a proud disposition, perpetual emotional volatility, and physical traits such as eyes resembling those of a snake.

How It Forms

This yoga forms when Mars, Moon, Saturn, and Venus are posited within the same zodiac sign in a natal chart. The conjunction represents a complex mixture of planetary energies: the watery, receptive Moon and the refined, pleasure-seeking Venus are forced into close proximity with the fiery, aggressive Mars and the cold, restrictive Saturn. This close association of natural benefics with natural malefics severely compromises the gentle qualities of the Moon and Venus, leading to the psychological and relational friction characteristic of the yoga.

Classical Effects

Emotional and Temperamental Traits

The primary impact of the Mars-Moon-Saturn-Venus Conjunction is felt in the native's emotional landscape. The authoritative definition of this yoga states that the individual will be proud, perpetually emotional, and possess eyes like a snake. The text My Experiences in Astrology holds that when the Moon is placed in a malefic sign and aspected or influenced by Mars and Saturn, the native becomes highly restless, impulsive, and quarrelsome. Additionally, Phaladeepika states that if the Moon is associated with or aspected by Mars and Saturn while occupying the second or twelfth house, the native is prone to suffering from eye diseases.

The maternal relationship is also severely impacted by this combination. According to Saravali, the sub-conjunction of Mars, the Moon, and Saturn in a single house causes the native to lose their mother during boyhood, rendering the individual mean, wicked, and inimical to others. Furthermore, Saravali states that the combination of Mars, Venus, and the Moon together makes the native the son of an unchaste woman, prone to a wandering disposition, and plagued by a fear of cold temperatures.

Marital and Relationship Discord

Marital issues are a central theme of this conjunction. The core definition indicates that the native is likely to marry an unchaste lady. This is supported by Saravali, which notes that the Mars-Venus-Moon combination inclines the native to marry a woman of questionable character. Jataka Parijata holds that when Venus is in a varga of Mars or Saturn, or is aspected by them, the native will engage in liaisons with other people's wives. Because Venus is directly conjoined with both Mars and Saturn in this yoga, this tendency is highly pronounced.

The severe affliction to the houses of union can also lead to the complete absence of a spouse. Jataka-Parijata states that if Venus and the Moon are in opposition to Mars and Saturn, the individual will remain wifeless or issueless. In cases where a marriage does occur, the intense friction indicated by Mars and Saturn acting on the Moon in a malefic sign can cause the spouse to either abandon the native or meet an early death, as noted in My Experiences in Astrology.

Progeny and Physical Health Ailments

The combination of these four planets has severe implications for progeny and physical well-being. The classical tradition broadly agrees, as stated in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, that if the Moon and Venus are associated with Saturn or Mars, and the fifth house is occupied or aspected by a malefic, the woman will be barren. Because all four planets are conjoined in this yoga, any malefic aspect or presence in the fifth house activates this condition. Jataka Parijata further holds that if the Moon and Venus occupy the first house owned by Saturn or Mars, and a malefic planet resides in the fifth house, the female native is barren.

Specific physical diseases are also attributed to this four-planet alignment. Jatak Alankaar states that if Venus, Mars, Moon, and Saturn are conjoined in the water signs of Pisces, Cancer, or Scorpio, it causes blood leprosy. Regarding internal organs, one Nadi tradition recorded in Roots of Nadi holds that when the Moon or Venus is linked to Saturn and Mars joins the configuration, it causes kidney problems, with the presence of Mars specifically indicating the formation of kidney stones. The same text states that the connection of the Moon or Venus with Saturn causes cold-related obstructive breathing, and if any two of the Moon, Venus, or Ketu are linked to Saturn or Jupiter, it indicates uterus problems in females. Furthermore, My Experiences in Astrology notes that if the lord of the sixth house aspects the Moon while Venus is conjunct Mars, Saturn aspects Venus, and Jupiter is in an inimical sign in the sixth house, the native will suffer from a serious stomach ailment brought on by constant tension and restlessness.

Strength and Timing

The effects of the Mars-Moon-Saturn-Venus Conjunction manifest primarily during the relevant dashas (planetary periods) and bhuktis (sub-periods) of the participating planets. The overall impact of the yoga depends heavily on the individual strength of the conjoined planets.

According to Roots of Nadi - Satyanarayan Naik, the strength of the yoga is classified by percentage: planets possessing a strength of 55% or above deliver good yoga results; those between 28% and 54% yield ordinary results; and those with a strength below 28% produce weak or negligible effects. Phaladeepika holds that a planet's strength is proportional to its distance from the bhava madhya (midpoint of the house) it occupies. Additionally, the system of PAC DARES kn rao notes that planetary strength must be evaluated based on the specific house in which the planets reside.

Diurnal and lunar factors also alter the strength of the individual components. New Techniques of Prediction states that the Moon, Mars, and Venus are naturally strong during the night, whereas Saturn is strong during the day. From a lunar perspective, Roots of Naadi Astrology holds that Venus and the Moon gain strength during the Shukla Paksha (bright half of the month), while Saturn and Mars are stronger during the Krishna Paksha (dark half of the month).

For physical ailments arising during the periods of these afflicted planets, New Techniques of Prediction suggests a remedial approach: administering medicines formulated with the chemical compounds or metals associated with the specific presiding planet causing the disease.

Cancellation and Caveats

The authoritative definition states that there are no direct cancellations or intensifications inherent to this yoga. However, classical texts provide specific spatial and house-based caveats that modify its expression.

First, the house placement of the conjunction can alter its maleficence. Saravali states that while the conjunction of the Moon with Mars or Saturn is generally highly inauspicious, this rule does not apply if the conjunction occurs in the tenth house. In the tenth house, this combination instead elevates the native, making them an Army chief. Furthermore, Saravali holds that malefics (such as Mars and Saturn) are auspicious when placed in the evil dustthana houses (the sixth, eighth, and twelfth houses), whereas benefics (such as the Moon and Venus) become adverse in these placements. Consequently, if this conjunction occurs in the sixth, eighth, or twelfth house, the destructive tendencies of Mars and Saturn are mitigated, though the positive significations of the Moon and Venus will suffer.

Variant Readings

The classical texts note several variations of this planetary grouping, particularly when other planets join the conjunction or when the spatial relationship changes:

  • The Opposition Variant: Jataka-Parijata records a variant where Venus and the Moon are in direct opposition to Mars and Saturn rather than conjoined in the same sign. In this configuration, the native is predicted to be wifeless or issueless.
  • The Five-Planet Conjunction with Mercury: If Mercury joins the Mars-Moon-Saturn-Venus group, the results are modified. Scientific Hindu Astrology states that the native will have many foes and friends, be fond of working for others, be too proud and self-respecting, and possess an odd nature. Another reading from the same text warns that this five-planet combination can cause the native to be troubled by death, murder, imprisonment, or disease, resulting in poverty, a badly shaped body, and making them a poor scholar.
  • The Five-Planet Conjunction with the Sun: If the Sun joins the four planets instead of Mercury, Scientific Hindu Astrology holds that the native will be entirely devoid of self-respect, riches, and prosperity, prone to evil ways, and fond of other women.
