Dhana Yoga (Cancer Lagna) is a highly auspicious wealth-producing combination in Vedic astrology, specifically configured for individuals born with a Cancer ascendant. Representing a significant flow of material prosperity, this yoga signifies the acquisition of immense wealth and financial security. It is categorized as a pure benefic yoga, carrying no inherent negative effects, and is activated when the Moon, as the ascendant lord, occupies the first house and receives the aspects of both Jupiter and Mars.
How It Forms
The Dhana Yoga (Cancer Lagna) is established when the following three conditions are met simultaneously in the natal chart:
- The Ascendant (Lagna) is Cancer.
- The Moon is positioned in the 1st house (Cancer Lagna).
- The Moon is aspected by both Jupiter and Mars.
This configuration leverages the unique relationship between the Moon, Jupiter, and Mars. One Nadi tradition, as recorded in the work Prasna Arudhaphala, notes that when the Lagna is a watery sign (such as Cancer) and a benefic planet like the Moon or Jupiter is posited there, it indicates the successful arrival of one's endeavors, metaphorically described as the arrival of a ship. Furthermore, the same text holds that the material of one's treasure is determined by the planet aspecting the Moon; specifically, when the Moon is aspected by Mars, it signifies copper, whereas an aspect from the Sun indicates gold, and Mercury indicates brass.
The planetary friendships among these bodies also play a role. Scientific Hindu Astrology notes that the Moon counts Jupiter among its friends, while Mars has Mercury and Venus as friends, and Jupiter considers all planets except Mars as its friends.

The strength of the yoga is highly dependent on the dignity and potency of the participating planets. The astrological tradition broadly agrees that a planet in its exaltation sign gains maximum strength and rays, whereas a planet in its debilitation sign possesses zero rays. This principle is plainly stated across classical works such as Saravali and Phaladeepika. Additionally, Phaladeepika holds that planetary strength is proportional to whether the birth time is mid-noon or mid-night, or how the Sun-Moon distance varies.
To fully manifest the positive effects of this yoga, the planets must meet specific strength thresholds. Phaladeepika holds that planets are considered strong when they reach specific Shadbala Pinda values: the Moon must reach 6 Rupas, Mars 5 Rupas, and Jupiter 8.5 Rupas. If the Shadbala strength falls below these thresholds, the planet is considered weak, and its significations will be meagre.
The timing of birth also alters the inherent strength of the planets. This is particularly critical since Mars and Jupiter must aspect the Moon in the 1st house to form the yoga; if their physical placement relative to the Moon falls into these dangerous zones, the wealth-giving potential of the yoga is compromised.
Additionally, Scientific Hindu Astrology holds that if the Moon is in the 6th or 8th house from Jupiter, and the Moon is not in a Kendra from the Lagna, the native will lose fortune, become insignificant, and suffer poverty and misery. Finally, if the Lagna lord (the Moon) is placed in the duststhana houses (6th, 8th, or 12th), Jatak Alankaar warns of specific physical ailments: if conjoined with Mars, it causes glandular (Granthi) disease, and if conjoined with Jupiter, it causes rheumatism (Amavata).
