Any vimshottari dasha calculator produces the same timeline from the same birth data - the arithmetic is fixed. What differs is whether you understand where the numbers come from, and that decides whether the timeline is usable.
The Vimshottari Dasha system is the "Master Clock" of Vedic Astrology. It mathematically divides 120 years of human lifespan into planetary periods based on the exact degree of the Moon at birth. The Rajvidya Dasha Chronology module provides an ultra-precise timeline, mapping your life events from birth (Maha-dasha) down to the specific day (Sookshma-dasha).
1. The Hierarchy of Time: Mahadasha to Pratyantar
- Mahadasha (The Era/10-20 Years): The overarching theme of a decade. For example, a 19-year Saturn Mahadasha enforces relentless discipline, structural reality, and delayed gratification. A 7-year Ketu Mahadasha enforces isolation, spiritual detachment, and sudden endings.
- Antardasha (The Chapter/1-3 Years): The sub-period that brings the immediate physical results. While Saturn provides the "Stage," the Antardasha planet acts as the "Actor." A Saturn-Venus period brings marriage or aesthetic luxury within a highly structured era.
- Pratyantardasha (The Checkpoint/Weeks-Months): These are micro-triggers lasting weeks or months that finalize the exact delivery date of the event promised by the Antardasha.
2. The Rule of the 6th, 8th, and 12th Lords
When the Mahadasha (Major Period) of a Dusthana (6, 8, 12) lord commences, the physical reality must shift to accommodate its inherent nature.
- Dasha of the 6th Lord: A period of intense labor, litigation, and overcoming acute obstacles. The engine flags this as a time where "Enemies become the stepping stones to success" (if the 6th lord is strong).
- Dasha of the 8th Lord: The cycle of sudden breaks. Physical ailments, inheritance, psychological trauma, or occult discoveries. Rajvidya marks this as an unpredictable "Restructuring Phase."
- Dasha of the 12th Lord: The cycle of expenditure. This triggers foreign travel, massive capital deployment, hospitalizations, or spiritual isolation (Ashram living).
3. The Dispositor Rule (The Secret Boss)
Most basic systems only look at the Dasha Lord. The Rajvidya engine structurally audits the Dispositor—the planet ruling the sign where the Dasha Lord sits.
Clinical Logic: If you are running the Sun Dasha, but the Sun is in Leo (ruled by Sun), the results are direct and unimpeded. But if the Sun is in Libra (ruled by Venus), Venus becomes the "Secret Boss" holding the keys to the results. If Venus is afflicted, the Sun Dasha will fail to deliver authority, substituting it with relationship friction instead.
4. Combust & Retrograde Dasha Delivery
A planet cannot deliver its full quota of wealth or happiness if it is structurally impaired. If you are entering the Dasha of a Combust (Moudhya) Jupiter, the promised financial expansion will be "burned out" by the ego or authority figures (Sun). If the planet is Retrograde (Vakra), the Dasha will be characterized by extreme delays, repeating events, and the return of individuals from your past.
How the Timeline Is Computed
The cycle runs 120 years, divided among the nine grahas in fixed proportions: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17 years. The sequence is invariable.
The starting point is the Moon nakshatra at birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras is ruled by one of the nine planets in the same repeating order, and the lord of the birth nakshatra owns the first mahadasha.
The opening period is almost never a full one. It is prorated by how far the Moon has already travelled through that nakshatra: a Moon 60% through Rohini leaves 4 of the 10 Moon years. This balance of dasha at birth determines every later date in the timeline.
Why Two Calculators Give Different Dates
Ayanamsha. Lahiri and Raman differ by roughly a degree, and since the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, that can place the Moon in a different nakshatra pada, changing the starting lord and shifting the whole timeline.
Year length. Some implementations use a 365.25-day year, others the 360-day savana year. Across a 19-year Saturn mahadasha this compounds into months.
Birth-time accuracy. Four minutes of birth time moves the Moon about one arcminute, which is harmless unless the Moon sits near a nakshatra boundary.
A calculator that does not state its ayanamsha and year-length convention cannot be reconciled with any other. Check these before assuming either timeline is wrong.
Reading the Timeline Without Overreading It
A dasha period is a window in which certain significations become available. It is not a schedule of events.
A dasha has no inherent results; the planet does. The running planet delivers according to its own house placement, lordships and strength. Saturn mahadasha in one chart and in another have little in common beyond the name.
Descending to pratyantardasha and below is where most overreading happens. Those subdivisions are arithmetically real but rest on birth-time accuracy. If the birth time is good only to a quarter of an hour, a pratyantar boundary computed to the day is false precision.
