How It Forms
Sunapha Yoga is formed when any planet, excluding the Sun, occupies the second house from the Moon. Specifically, the yoga is initiated when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, or Saturn is posited in the second house relative to the Moon's natal position. The Sun, Rahu, and Ketu are strictly excluded from participating in this formation and cannot generate the yoga.
Classical Effects
General Significations
The primary manifestation of Sunapha Yoga is the self-acquisition of wealth and the development of sharp intelligence. Individuals born with this yoga typically achieve a king-like status in their respective spheres of life. They are widely recognized as wise, wealthy, and famous. Because the second house governs personal assets, speech, and early education, the presence of a strong planet here from the Moon ensures that the native's financial and intellectual foundations are built on solid, self-created ground.
Planetary Variations
The specific results of Sunapha Yoga vary and are intensified depending on which planet occupies the second house from the Moon:
- Mars: Intensifies the yoga to confer abundant wealth and great valor.
- Mercury: Directs the energy toward high intelligence, learning, and deep wisdom.
- Jupiter: Bestows outstanding virtue, righteous conduct, and immense wealth.
- Venus: Focuses the life path on the enjoyment of pleasures, luxury, and aesthetic refinement.
- Saturn: Grants steady wealth, land, and agricultural or structural properties.
Strength and Timing
The positive fruits of Sunapha Yoga are primarily delivered during the Dasa (planetary period) of the specific planet occupying the second house from the Moon. The overall efficacy and strength of the yoga depend on several factors of planetary dignity and strength.
The tradition broadly agrees that a planet's strength is heavily influenced by the specific house it occupies. Furthermore, planets possess an inherent hierarchy of strength that dictates their capacity to deliver results. To evaluate the precise strength of the yoga-forming planet, classical texts offer several guidelines:
- According to Vrishabha Vijaya Jyothisha Prakaasham, the strength of a planet is graded in descending order from its highest state of exaltation, followed by its own house, moolatrikona, a friendly house, and finally its state of debilitation.
- Phaladeepika holds that a planet's strength is proportional to its distance from the Bhava madhya (the midpoint of the house).
- Phaladeepika also states that a planet's strength is proportional to the variations in the Sun-Moon distance and whether the birth occurs at mid-noon or mid-night.
- According to New Techniques of Prediction, planets possess specific strengths based on the time of day. The Moon, Mars, and Venus are strong at night; the Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn are strong during the day; while Mercury remains strong at all times. Additionally, Shirodaya planets (Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus) are strong during the day, whereas Pristodaya planets (Sun, Mars, and Saturn) are powerful at night.
- Bhava and Graha Balas states that the Moon and Venus gain 15 Shashtiamsas of strength when posited in even signs (Yugma Rasi) or even Navamsas, whereas Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, and Saturn gain 15 Shashtiamsas in odd signs (Oja Rasi) or odd Navamsas.
- One Nadi tradition recorded in Roots of Naadi Astrology holds that Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon are strong during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha), while Saturn, Mars, and the Sun are strong during the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha).
- Regarding the quantitative threshold of these effects, Roots of Nadi - Satyanarayan Naik suggests that planets with 55% or above strength provide good yoga results, those with 28% to 54% strength provide ordinary results, and those below 28% yield weak results.
Cancellation and Caveats
The beneficial effects of Sunapha Yoga are subject to cancellation or dilution under specific conditions. The yoga is nullified if the participating planet in the second house from the Moon is combust or eclipsed.
According to Kalamsa and Cuspal Interlinks, the exact longitudinal proximity to the Sun that causes combustion varies by planet. The combustion limits are defined as 12 degrees for the Moon, 17 degrees for Mars, 14 degrees for Mercury, 11 degrees for Jupiter, 10 degrees for Venus, and 16 degrees for Saturn. If the planet forming the Sunapha Yoga falls within these specified degree ranges from the Sun, it becomes combust, thereby cancelling the yoga's positive promises.
Additionally, the yoga is considered weak if the participating planet is debilitated. However, classical principles from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra provide significant exceptions to this weakness. If the debilitated planet has its debility cancelled (forming Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga) and is placed in a Kendra (angular) or Trikona (trinal) house, it can still produce a powerful Raja Yoga, bringing status and success during its periods and sub-periods. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra also notes that a debilitated planet can generate Raja Yoga if it rules or occupies the 3rd or 6th house, or if it is posited in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house while the Lagna lord is strong (exalted, in its own sign, or aspecting the Lagna).
Conversely, if the planet is afflicted without such cancellation, Saravali warns that its positive significations will be rendered meagre, and the native may not fully enjoy the fruits of the yoga.
Variant Readings
While the standard definition of Sunapha Yoga requires any of the five non-luminary planets to occupy the second house from the Moon, certain classical works identify specific multi-planet variations that modify this structure.
According to Scientific Hindu Astrology, a highly specific variant known as Chandra Yoga is formed when Jupiter and Saturn are both placed in the second house from the Moon, while Mars is situated in the fifth house and Venus occupies the eighth house. When this precise configuration occurs, the texts state that the native is guaranteed to become a highly successful, self-made individual, embodying the ultimate promise of the Sunapha configuration.
