Sraddhannabhuktha Yoga (श्राद्धान्नभुक्त योग) is an inauspicious planetary combination in Vedic astrology classified under the Arishta (malefic) category. The name of the yoga literally translates to the consumption of food offered during obsequies or funeral rites (Sraddha). In classical Indian culture, partaking of food from death ceremonies is considered spiritually and socially undesirable, symbolizing a state of dependency, misfortune, or association with grief and impurity. This yoga signifies that the native will eat food from death ceremonies, indicating a lack of choice or circumstances that lead to consuming such inauspicious sustenance. It is primarily concerned with the second house of the horoscope—which governs food, speech, and family wealth—and its direct affliction by Saturn, the planet of delay, sorrow, and low-status associations.

How It Forms

According to the authoritative definition, Sraddhannabhuktha Yoga is formed through the relationship between Saturn and the second house of the horoscope. The yoga is defined to occur under any of the following three conditions:

  • Saturn is the Lord of the second house.
  • Saturn conjoins the second house Lord.
  • The second house is aspected by a debilitated Saturn.

When analyzing a horoscope to determine the presence of this yoga, the tradition broadly agrees that the exact position of the Lagna (Ascendant) and its cusps must be prioritized over the Moon sign. Multiple works in the KP tradition, including K.P reader 3 Predictive stellar astro and Predictive Stellar Astrology, state plainly that the astrologer should always use the Lagna instead of the Moon sign for predictions and house analysis, regardless of whether the Lagna is afflicted. This ensures that the second house boundaries and the lordship of the second house are calculated with mathematical precision rather than relying on the lunar rashi.

Classical Effects

The classical texts do not ascribe any positive outcomes to Sraddhannabhuktha Yoga. Its effects are entirely malefic and center on the quality and source of the native's food, as well as broader afflictions to the second house significations.

Inauspicious Sustenance

The primary and defining effect of Sraddhannabhuktha Yoga is that the native eats food from death ceremonies. This indicates a life situation where one is forced or accustomed to consuming food prepared for the deceased or during funeral rites, which is traditionally viewed as spiritually and physically degrading.

Related Second House Afflictions

Because the second house governs the mouth, teeth, and face, Saturn's connection to this house brings other physical and situational difficulties. One Nadi tradition, recorded in Jataka tattvam Kadalangudi, as well as the classical text Sarvartha Chintamani JN Bhasin, notes that if the lord of the second house is situated in the Lagna alongside both Saturn and Mars, the native's ear may be cut. Furthermore, in the KP system, one text holds that if the sub-lord of the second cusp is connected with Saturn, the native suffers from toothache, as documented in K.P reader 3 Predictive stellar astro.

Other classical configurations involving Saturn and the second house also point to relational discord. For instance, one text, Scientific hindu astrology, notes that if Rahu occupies the Lagna with the Moon or his friends while Saturn is placed in the second house, a combination called Sholaskodhu Yoga is formed, which causes troubles and quarrels in the native's life.

Strength and Timing

The manifestation of Sraddhannabhuktha Yoga is highly dependent on planetary periods and transits, particularly those of Saturn.

Dasha Operations

The effects of Sraddhannabhuktha Yoga become fully active and strong during the major planetary period (Dasa) of Saturn. If Saturn is positioned as a maraka (killer or death-inflicting planet)—such as when it occupies the second house from the Lagna and the third from the Moon, with the Moon acting as the third lord in the twelfth house—its Dasa can bring severe physical distress alongside the malefic food indications, while the Moon's sub-period (Bhukti) may deliver the final critical results, as observed in How to judge horoscope 2.

Additionally, one text, My Experiences in Astrology, notes that if Saturn is the lord of the second house from the Pitrukaraka (significator of father) and is situated in the twelfth house from the Lagna, the father's death would have occurred before the end of Saturn's Dasa, typically around the age of fifteen.

Transit and Chronic Manifestations

The timing of Saturn's transits can trigger or worsen the native's circumstances. According to the vedic astro textbook, Saturn's transit over the Lagna causes general obstructions, its transit over the Chandra Lagna (Moon sign) brings mental depression, and its transit over the Paaka Lagna (the sign occupied by the Lagna lord) results in physical sickness. In the KP system, one text, Kalamsa and Cuspal Interlinks, suggests that if the planet responsible for a disease is connected to Saturn, the illness tends to become chronic and difficult to cure. Similarly, another KP work, Astrology KP System, holds that when Saturn is connected to the Moon for any specific house (Bhava), the results of that house are delayed, bringing frustration and obstacles. Therefore, during Saturn's transits over key points in the chart, the malefic indications of the second house—including the consumption of inauspicious food—are intensified.

Cancellation and Caveats

According to the authoritative definition of Sraddhannabhuktha Yoga, there are no specific cancellations or factors that nullify this combination. Once the physical alignment of Saturn with the second house or its lord is established, the potential for the yoga remains in the chart.

However, astrologers must exercise caution when evaluating Saturn's general placement. For example, the classical work Jataka Parijata states that Saturn in the eighth house from the Lagna invariably gives what is agreeable, which may alter the overall experience of Saturn's dasha. Additionally, one KP text, K.P reader 3 Predictive stellar astro, cautions that when Saturn transits the eighth house, fourth house, or during the period of Sade-Sati, one should not hastily conclude that the time is entirely evil without evaluating the broader planetary aspects and the exact cuspal strengths of the horoscope.

Furthermore, if Saturn also happens to be the Lagna lord, its influence becomes exceptionally significant for the native's overall life and destiny, as observed in My Experiences in Astrology B.V Raman. In cases where Saturn is placed in the first house, one KP source, K.P reader 3 Predictive stellar astro, notes that it can indicate a lazy, lethargic disposition, abortive tendencies, loss of children, and health issues, which can further complicate the native's physical well-being alongside the effects of the second house affliction.
