Yoga for loss of brothers and sisters.

Share

Sodaranasa Yoga (सोदरनाश योग) is a malefic (Arishta) astrological combination that signifies the loss or complete absence of brothers and sisters. Derived from the Sanskrit words for sibling (sodara) and destruction (nasa), this yoga indicates a destiny where the native is devoid of co-borns. It highlights how severe afflictions to the significator of siblings and the house of siblings can deny the native the support and presence of brothers and sisters in their life.

How It Forms

According to the authoritative definition, Sodaranasa Yoga is formed when Mars—the natural significator (karaka) for siblings—and the lord of the 3rd house (the house of siblings) are both posited in the 8th house and are aspected by malefic planets.

A detailed variant of this formation expands the potential placements of these planets. Under this rule, the yoga is constituted when Mars and the 3rd lord occupy either the 8th house, or the 3rd, 5th, or 7th houses, while receiving the aspect of malefic planets.

Classical Effects

The primary and defining consequence of Sodaranasa Yoga is that the native is entirely devoid of brothers and sisters. Classical texts expand upon the underlying malefic behaviors of Mars and the 3rd house to contextualize how this loss and related afflictions manifest in the horoscope.

The Malefic Nature of Mars in Dusthana Houses

The placement of Mars in the houses associated with this yoga is considered highly volatile. As noted in How to judge horoscope 2, Mars is inherently harmful when placed in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, and 12th houses from either the Lagna (Ascendant) or the Chandra Lagna (Moon sign). When Mars occupies the 8th house under an immoveable Lagna, Jataka Parijata states that the native is destined for servitude. Furthermore, if Mars in the 8th house is conjunct Saturn, while Rahu is in the Lagna and Gulika is in a Trikona (trine), Jataka Parijata Vol 2 warns that the combination yields highly evil results.

If the yoga forms in the 7th house, the conjunction of Mars and Saturn without favorable aspects can make the native aggressive, intolerant of adversaries, fanatical, and ruthless, according to How to judge horoscope 2. Additionally, Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra holds that a female native faces widowhood if Mars is placed in the 12th, 4th, 7th, or 8th house from the Lagna without any benefic aspect.

Afflictions to the Third House and Third Lord

The 3rd house and its lord are central to the well-being of siblings, and their affliction brings severe consequences. The Jaimini Sutras state that if many evil planets occupy the 3rd house from the Lagna or the Karaka, it indicates a painful death, whereas benefic planets in the same position indicate an easy death. Furthermore, Jataka tattvam Kadalangudi notes that if the lord of the 3rd house and the lord of the amsa occupied by the Lagna lord are in a quadrant (Kendra), or if Saturn, Mars, and Rahu occupy the same sign, the native suffers from an affliction in the head.

Strength and Timing

Sodaranasa Yoga is highly dependent on planetary periods for its activation. The malefic effects of being devoid of or losing siblings are most strongly felt during the Dasa (major planetary period) or Bhukti (sub-period) of Mars or the lord of the 3rd house.

Cancellation and Caveats

The severe implications of Sodaranasa Yoga are not absolute. The primary mitigating factor is the aspect of benefic planets. If Mars and the 3rd lord receive the aspect of natural benefics (such as Jupiter, Venus, or an unafflicted Moon), the malefic nature of the yoga is canceled or significantly diluted, preserving the welfare of the native's siblings.

Variant Readings

While Sodaranasa Yoga represents the denial or loss of siblings, classical texts outline contrasting configurations where siblings thrive. According to Jataka Tattvam, if the Lagna or the Lagna lord is associated with Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, and the Moon in the 3rd or 11th house, several brothers are born to the native; if Ketu occupies this position instead, several sisters are born.

Additionally, Jataka-Parijata notes that if the lord of the 3rd house is in its own varga or exaltation, the results are highly charming. The same text states that if Mercury is in the 3rd house and the 3rd house is a sign owned by Mars (Aries or Scorpio), the native's ornaments or surroundings will be variegated, showing that a strong 3rd lord can produce positive material results rather than destruction.
