Satru Malika Yoga (शत्रु मालिका योग) is a specific planetary combination belonging to the Naabhasa category of yogas in Vedic astrology. Unlike many auspicious planetary configurations, this yoga is classified as non-benefic, signifying a life path marked by financial struggle and specific behavioral challenges. It primarily indicates that the native will be greedy and somewhat poor, with no positive effects attributed to its presence in a horoscope.

How It Forms

According to the authoritative definition, Satru Malika Yoga is formed when all seven physical planets—excluding the lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu—occupy a continuous, unbroken chain of seven houses starting from the 6th house and ending in the 12th house. This means there must be continuous planetary occupation from the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th houses, with no empty houses in between. Because the chain begins in the 6th house (traditionally known as the Satru Bhava, or house of enemies and obstacles), the yoga takes its name from this starting point.

In establishing the house boundaries and calculating this continuous chain, the choice of reference point is critical. The Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) tradition broadly agrees that when analyzing a horoscope, performing predictions, or predicting house results, the astrologer must prioritize and use the exact position of the Lagna (Ascendant) and its cusps rather than the Moon sign (attested by K.P reader 3 Predictive stellar astro and Predictive Stellar Astrology). This rule applies consistently regardless of whether the Lagna is afflicted. Therefore, the continuous sequence from the 6th to the 12th house must be calculated strictly from the Ascendant cusp to ensure the yoga is genuinely present.

Classical Effects

The classical texts attribute no positive outcomes to Satru Malika Yoga. Instead, its effects are entirely restrictive, impacting both the character and the material circumstances of the native.

Behavioral Traits

A person born under the influence of Satru Malika Yoga is described as greedy. Because the planetary energy is concentrated in a continuous sequence starting from the 6th house of struggle and ending in the 12th house of loss, the native's psychological focus is often dominated by a grasping or covetous nature. This behavioral pattern arises from a perpetual sense of lack or an inability to find contentment in their acquisitions.

Material and Financial Standing

The primary material consequence of this yoga is that the native remains somewhat poor. The concentration of planets across the duststhanas (the 6th, 8th, and 12th houses) disrupts the smooth accumulation and retention of wealth. To fully evaluate the financial prospects of a native with this configuration, the Satyajatakam Dhruva Nadi advises that the astrologer must carefully evaluate both the 2nd house from the Lagna and the 2nd house from the Moon. This dual evaluation helps determine the exact degree of financial hardship or whether other factors might offer some relief from the poverty indicated by the yoga.

Strength and Timing

Satru Malika Yoga is considered to be always strong and active, meaning its structural influence persists as a lifelong background theme in the native's life. Unlike temporary planetary transits, Naabhasa Yogas represent the fundamental skeletal structure of the horoscope.

However, the manifestation of its effects is particularly felt during the planetary periods (dashas and bhuktis) of the planets that constitute the seven-house chain. According to classical guidelines found in the Jataka Parijata, a dasha period is generally considered auspicious or favourable if the dasha lord is placed in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 10th, or 11th houses from the Lagna, or if the dasha lord is in its own sign (Swakshetra), its exaltation sign, or a friendly house. In Satru Malika Yoga, several planets will inevitably occupy the 6th, 10th, and 11th houses. Consequently, if these specific participating planets are well-placed by sign (such as being in exaltation or Swakshetra), their respective dashas may bring temporary periods of success or relief, even though the overall life pattern remains constrained by the yoga's general indications.

Cancellation and Caveats

While the core definition of Satru Malika Yoga states that there is no direct cancellation of the yoga itself, general principles from classical astrological traditions provide important caveats that can mitigate or alter its negative outcomes.

Debilitation and Raja Yoga Exceptions

Because seven planets are spread across seven consecutive houses, it is highly likely that one or more planets within the chain will be in a state of debilitation. Under the general principles of the Parashara tradition, a debilitated planet does not always spell disaster. According to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, if a planet is debilitated and occupies a duststhana like the 6th house, it can actually form a Raja Yoga (or Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga) under specific conditions. This occurs when the Lagna lord is exalted, occupies its own sign, or directly aspects the Lagna. In such cases, the debility is cancelled, and the planet can bring status, success, and sudden rise during its periods and sub-periods, thereby diluting the poverty-inducing effects of the Satru Malika Yoga.

The Role of the 6th and Lagna Lords

Since the planetary chain of Satru Malika Yoga originates in the 6th house, the relationship between the lord of the 6th house and the lord of the Lagna is of paramount importance. As noted in the Jatak Alankaar, a detailed analysis of the relationship between the 6th house lord and the Lagna lord is necessary to determine the native's true nature and their capacity to overcome the obstacles, debts, and adversarial conditions represented by this yoga. If the Lagna lord dominates the 6th lord, the native will possess the resilience to manage the challenges of the yoga, whereas a weak Lagna lord subordinate to the 6th lord will amplify the negative traits of greed and financial instability.
