Arishta (Challenging)

Yoga for chronic ill-health and weak constitution.

Rogagrastha Yoga (रोगग्रस्त योग) is a malefic (Arishta) astrological combination that signifies a weak physical constitution, chronic ill-health, and a persistent susceptibility to disease. When this yoga is present in a birth chart, the native typically suffers from a lack of physical vitality and struggles with ongoing bodily ailments throughout life, with classical authorities attributing no positive effects to its formation.

How It Forms

According to the authoritative definition, Rogagrastha Yoga forms under one of two distinct conditions:

  • The Lagna Lord (lord of the first house) is placed in the Lagna conjoined with the lord of the 6th, 8th, or 12th house.
  • A weak Lagna Lord is positioned in a Kendra (angular house) or a Trikona (trinal house), specifically within the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, or 10th house.

In the Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) tradition, as documented in Predictive Stellar Astrology and K.P reader 3 Predictive stellar astro, it is a broadly agreed principle that astrologers must prioritize the exact position of the Lagna and its cusps over the Moon sign when analyzing a horoscope or predicting house results. This rule remains absolute even if the Lagna is heavily afflicted, making the precise calculation of the ascendant vital for diagnosing this yoga.

To understand the underlying strength of the constitution, other traditions offer complementary diagnostic rules. One classical work, Jatak Alankaar, states that the relationship between the 6th house lord and the Lagna lord must be thoroughly analyzed to determine the native's physical nature. In Nadi astrology, specifically in Bhrighu NadiJyotisham (and echoed in Bhrighu Nadi Jyotisham 1), one tradition holds that when Ketu occupies the Lagna or any Kendra house (the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th), the native is naturally endowed with a weak constitution. Furthermore, the Jaimini Sutras suggest that if the Lagna or the 7th house is hemmed in by malefics (Papamadhyatwa), or if evil planets occupy the Trikonas from the Lagna or the 7th house, a reduction in lifespan (Kakshyahrasa) must be factored into the longevity analysis.

Classical Effects

The primary and defining manifestation of Rogagrastha Yoga is a sickly, frail body and a weak constitution. The classical texts detail various physical and situational outcomes associated with an afflicted Lagna and weak lords.

Physical Ailments and Obscurity

One classical text, Jataka Parijata, states that if the Lagna lord is placed in a malefic's house, occupies the 6th, 8th, or 12th house, and is aspected by or associated with a malignant planet, the native is bound to become obscure. For specific physical complaints, a combination recorded in the text yogas notes that if Jupiter is in the Lagna while Saturn is in the 7th house, it forms Vatharoga Yoga, which results in windy complaints, paralysis, and body pain. Additionally, the Jaimini Sutras state that if the 3rd house from the Lagna or the Karaka contains Guru (Jupiter), the native may face death caused by dropsy, a disgust for food, or melancholy.

Severe Afflictions and Recovery

In cases of extreme physical affliction, the work How to judge horoscope 2 warns that if the Moon is in the Lagna, Mars is in the 8th house, the Sun is in the 9th house, and Saturn is in the 12th house, the child dies quickly. However, the Tajika tradition, as preserved in the Prashna Tantra, offers a formula for recovery: a sick person is cured and recovers if benefics occupy the Kendras, Trikonas, or the 8th house, while the Moon is placed in an Upachaya house (the 3rd, 6th, 10th, or 11th) and the Lagna is aspected by benefics. The same Tajika text also notes that if the Lord of the 1st house is in a Kendra and has an Ithasala connection with the Lord of the 6th or 12th house, the querent will benefit from another master.

Strength and Timing

Rogagrastha Yoga is highly active and delivers its debilitating physical effects primarily during the Dasha (major planetary period) of the Lagna Lord or the 6th Lord.

To refine the timing and identify specific personal vulnerabilities, K.P reader 3 Predictive stellar astro advises analyzing the sub-lord of the Ascendant. Under this system, the astrologer identifies the constellation lord of the Ascendant's sub-lord, and the sign occupied by that constellation lord will reveal the native's inherent physical weaknesses and behavioral traits.

The strength of the yoga is also heavily dependent on whether the "weak Lagna Lord" in a Kendra or Trikona undergoes cancellation of debility. General principles from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra state that if a planet is debilitated but its debility is cancelled (forming Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga), and it is placed in a Kendra or Trikona, it ceases to be a source of misery. Instead, it produces status, success, and fame during its periods and sub-periods. Furthermore, Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra notes that if the Lord of the 1st house is in or aspects the 3rd, 5th, or 6th house, the native will yearn for and be in quest of knowledge, which can offset physical limitations with intellectual pursuits.

Cancellation and Caveats

Although the core definition of Rogagrastha Yoga does not list a direct cancellation, classical principles of planetary debility and house placement provide significant caveats that can dilute or entirely transform the yoga's malefic effects.

According to New Techniques of Prediction, a planet's debilitation is cancelled if the lord of the sign of debilitation is positioned in a Kendra from either the Lagna or the Moon. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra elaborates that if a debilitated planet's dispositor is in a Kendra or Trikona, or if the debilitated planet is conjoined with an exalted planet, a Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga is formed. Consequently, if the weak Lagna Lord that triggers Rogagrastha Yoga has its debility cancelled in this manner, the native will experience progressive happiness, status, and success rather than chronic sickness.

Additionally, Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra outlines an exception where a debilitated planet placed in the 3rd, 6th, 8th, or 12th house can actually generate a Raja Yoga, provided the Lagna lord is exalted, in its own sign, or aspects the Lagna. Finally, the Tajika principles in the Prashna Tantra show that the presence of well-placed benefics in angles or trines, coupled with benefic aspects to the Lagna, serves as a powerful counter-measure that can cure the physical weaknesses otherwise promised by this yoga.
