Raja Yoga (Moon Kendra), known in Sanskrit as राज योग (Rajayoga), is an auspicious and highly benefic planetary combination that signifies rulership, wealth, and widespread influence. It is formed when the Moon is placed in a Kendra house (specifically the 4th, 7th, or 10th house, excluding the Ascendant or Lagna) and is aspected by Jupiter. This configuration functions as a specialized variation of the classical Gajakesari Yoga, elevating the native to a position of authority and social prominence.

How It Forms

The primary definition of Raja Yoga (Moon Kendra) requires the Moon to be situated in the 4th, 7th, or 10th house from the Lagna, while simultaneously receiving a direct aspect from Jupiter.

This configuration is closely related to the widely recognized Gajakesari Yoga. The astrological tradition broadly agrees on the core parameters of Gajakesari Yoga, stating that it is formed when Jupiter and the Moon are in mutual Kendra houses (as attested in Notable Horoscopes and Marvel of Vedic Astrology Blind Chart Analysis). More specifically, the classical texts agree that Gajakesari Yoga occurs when Jupiter is placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house measured from the Moon, as documented in New Techniques of Prediction and Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra.

Beyond these broadly accepted definitions, individual texts outline specific structural variations and conditions:

  • One tradition in Notable Horoscopes states that Gajakesari Yoga is also formed simply when the Moon is associated with Jupiter.
  • The same work notes that Jupiter's placement specifically in the 7th house from the Moon is a distinct trigger for Gajakesari Yoga.
  • The Doctrines of Suka Nadi records a specific Raja Yoga formed when Jupiter occupies an angle (Kendra) in the company of both the Moon and the lord of the Ascendant.
  • Another highly specific configuration is noted in Jataka Parijata, where Mercury is in the Lagna, Jupiter is in the 7th house, the Moon is in the 4th house (specifically in Cancer/Kataka), and Venus is in the 10th house, which is said to produce a ruler of the earth.
  • In My Experiences in Astrology, a variation of Gajakesari Yoga is described where the Lagna is aspected by an exalted, Yogakaraka Mars and Jupiter, while the Lagna lord Moon is placed in either the 2nd or the 8th house.

Classical Effects

The primary effects of Raja Yoga (Moon Kendra) are the attainment of sovereign power, wealth, and an influential status. The classical texts expand on these outcomes through various planetary conjunctions and house placements involving the Moon and Jupiter.

Sovereignty and Wealth

When the Moon is in full strength, occupies a Kendra other than the Lagna, and is aspected by both Jupiter and Venus, Jataka Parijata Vol 2 states that the native is destined to be a king. Similarly, when the Moon and Jupiter are joined in the 9th house alongside Venus, Jataka-Parijata declares that the native will become a king. If the Moon, Mercury, and Jupiter occupy the 9th house, Jataka-Parijata holds that the native becomes a wealthy lord and a teacher.

When Jupiter and the Moon occupy the same house, Saravali states that the native will be firm in friendship, modest, and wealthy. If this conjunction is joined by Mercury, the native becomes wealthy, eloquent, bright, famous, and is blessed with many sons and brothers.

Character and Disposition

The addition of other planets to the Moon-Jupiter dynamic alters the native's character. Saravali notes that if the Sun joins the Moon and Jupiter in a single house, the native will be intelligent but fickle-minded, prone to anger, cunning, expert in service, and intent on traveling to foreign places. If Mars is the third planet joining the Moon and Jupiter, the native will possess an even body, be splendourous, dear to women, but also angry, a thief, and addicted to women.

Longevity and Prosperity

The combination of a strong Moon and Jupiter has a significant impact on life span. The tradition broadly agrees that if there are no planets in the 8th house from the Lagna and no planets in the 8th house from the Moon, and both Jupiter and Venus are powerful, the native is blessed with a longevity of 120 years (as attested in Scientific Hindu Astrology and Jatakalankara).

Additionally, Jatak Alankaar states that if the Lagna is Pisces with Venus posited there aspected by benefics, the Moon is in the 8th house, and Jupiter is in a Kendra, the native will live for 100 years. If Jupiter and Venus are in Kendras while the Moon is in the 11th house, a lifespan of 120 years is promised.

For general prosperity, Jataka Parijata notes that if the 5th or 7th house from either the Lagna or the Moon is occupied or aspected by a benefic planet or its own lord, prosperity is indicated. Furthermore, if the Moon is associated with Jupiter, Jataka Parijata holds that the quality of the native's clothing will be of fine silk.

Strength and Timing

The auspicious results of this yoga primarily manifest during the major planetary periods (Dashas) and sub-periods (Bhuktis) of the participating planets. Specifically, the yoga is highly active during the Moon Mahadasha and Jupiter Apahara (sub-period), which Jataka-Parijata-Vol-3 states will bring the acquisition of vehicles, clothing, ornaments, and overall success in endeavors.

The strength of the yoga depends heavily on the inherent power of the planets. According to Roots of Nadi, a planet with a strength of 55% or above provides a "good yoga," while a strength between 28% and 55% yields ordinary results, and anything below 28% produces weak effects. Furthermore, Saravali notes that if the planets representing core significations are strong, their positive indications will be highly pronounced, whereas weak planets yield meagre results. An extraordinary Raja Yoga is formed if the Moon is aspected by many planets, as recorded in An Astrobiographical Sketch of Dr BVRaman.

In terms of predictive application, the KP tradition (Predictive Stellar Astrology) emphasizes a vital methodological rule: astrologers must always prioritize the exact position of the Lagna and its cusps over the Moon sign for house results and predictions, regardless of whether the Lagna is afflicted. Additionally, K.P reader 3 notes that natural benefics—including Jupiter, Venus, a waxing Moon, and unafflicted Mercury—actually become unfavorable in their disposition if they own Kendra houses (the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th).

Cancellation and Caveats

While Raja Yoga (Moon Kendra) is highly benefic, certain planetary placements act as severe caveats or counter-combinations that nullify its positive effects.

The most prominent counter-combination is Sakata Yoga. Jataka Parijata states that if Jupiter is placed in the 6th or 8th house from the Moon, and is not in a Kendra from the Lagna, Sakata Yoga is formed. Scientific Hindu Astrology warns that when the Moon is in the 6th or 8th house from Jupiter (and the Moon is not in a Kendra from the Lagna), the native will lose their fortune, become insignificant, stubborn, hated by relatives, and suffer from privation, poverty, and misery.

Additionally, the absence of Jupiter's aspect on the key pillars of the chart carries negative implications. Jataka Parijata states that if Jupiter does not aspect both the Lagna and the Moon, and the Moon is in conjunction with the Sun and associated with a malefic, the child is declared illegitimate in the absence of neutralizing Apavada yogas. Conversely, if the Lagna or the Moon is in a Navamsa owned by Jupiter, the child should not be declared illegitimate. Furthermore, Jataka Parijata Vol 1 notes that if the rising sign and the Moon are aspected by malefics without any benefic aspects, and Jupiter is not in a Kendra, the mother of the newborn child will die early.

Finally, regarding progeny, Phaladeepika warns that if the 5th house from the Lagna, Moon, or Jupiter is associated with or aspected by malefics, and lacks any benefic association or aspect, childlessness must be pronounced.

Variant Readings

The traditions present minor variations regarding the specific signs and houses that modify the yoga's expression. For example, the Doctrines of Suka Nadi notes that if the Ascendant is Scorpio, Jupiter and the Moon function as key benefics, and the combination of the Moon and the Sun specifically forms a Rajayoga, while Jupiter acts as a conditional Maraka (death-inflicting planet).

Furthermore, Jaimini rules (Jaimini Sutras) present a different framework for determining poverty and wealth: if evil planets occupy beneficial signs while benefic planets occupy evil signs, the native will be poor, contrasting with the standard rules of planetary strength. Jaimini also calculates longevity based on whether the lords of the Lagna, Chandra (Moon), and the 8th house are placed in movable, fixed, or common signs.
