Raja Yoga (3 Planets Exalted), also known in Sanskrit as राज योग, is a highly auspicious and powerful benefic combination in Vedic astrology. It is categorized as a premier Raja Yoga that signifies supreme authority, power, and the attainment of a status equivalent to a famous king.
How It Forms
According to the authoritative definition, this yoga forms when three or more planets are in their state of exaltation or in their own signs, and are simultaneously placed in the quadrants or angular houses (Kendras), which correspond to the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses.
Regarding the definition of these angular positions, one text in the Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) tradition, K.P reader 3 Predictive stellar astro, defines Kendra signs as the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th signs counted from either the Lagna or from any planet.
When analyzing a horoscope or predicting results, the astrological tradition broadly agrees that the astrologer must utilize the exact position of the Lagna (Ascendant) and its cusps rather than relying on the Moon sign. This rule remains paramount even if the Lagna is afflicted, as noted in both K.P reader 3 Predictive stellar astro and Predictive Stellar Astrology.
Classical Effects
The primary and direct result of the Raja Yoga (3 Planets Exalted) is the creation of a famous king, bringing immense renown, leadership, and sovereign power.
Sovereignty and Kingly Lifestyle
While this specific yoga directly promises kingship, classical texts describe related planetary alignments that mirror these royal effects. The text yogas states that when seven planets occupy seven continuous houses starting from the Lagna (known as Lagna Malika) or starting from the 4th, 7th, or 10th houses (Chapa Yoga), the native is brave, possesses a kingly presence and lifestyle, and experiences extreme happiness in both the initial and final periods of life.
Furthermore, the text Jataka-Parijata holds that if two or more benefic planets aspect the Lagna, the individual will be happy, and if all benefics aspect the Lagna, the person is destined to be a king.
Wealth, Nobility, and Character
Other classical formulations of Raja Yoga emphasize the acquisition of noble traits and wealth. The text yogas describes Lakshmi Yoga—occurring when the Lagna lord is powerful and the lord of the 9th house is in its own or exaltation sign within a Kendra or Trikona—as conferring tremendous wealth, fortune, learning, nobility, integrity, and leadership. Similarly, Gauri Yoga (where the lord of the Navamsa occupied by the 10th lord is exalted in the 10th house and conjoins the 1st lord) is said to grant a reputed family, wealth, land, and a charitable, religious disposition.
Strength and Timing
The authoritative definition states that this yoga is always strong and does not suffer from inherent weaknesses. However, classical texts provide extensive guidelines on how Raja Yogas deliver their results through planetary periods (dashas and bhuktis) and how planetary strength is modified.
Dasha Manifestation and Debility Cancellation
The timing of a Raja Yoga is closely tied to the dashas of the participating planets. Classical texts like Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra outline how even debilitated planets can participate in or trigger Raja Yogas under specific conditions. For instance, if a planet is debilitated but its debility is canceled, and it is placed in a Kendra or Trikona house, it produces a Raja Yoga and brings status and success during its periods and sub-periods.
According to New Techniques of Prediction, the cancellation of debility (Neecha Bhanga) occurs when the lord of the sign occupied by the debilitated planet, or the lord of its debilitation sign, is situated in a Kendra from either the Lagna or the Moon. Additionally, Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra states that a debilitated planet can produce a Raja Yoga in its dasha or bhukti if it rules or occupies the 3rd or 6th house, or if it is placed in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house while the Lagna lord is exalted, in its own sign, or aspects the Lagna.
The relationship between Kendra and Trikona lords also governs the timing of success. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra notes that if a Kendra lord aspects a Trikona lord, or if the 10th lord aspects the Lagna lord, it forms a highly successful and fame-giving combination.
Cancellation and Caveats
Although the core definition of this yoga states there is no direct cancellation, classical texts offer important caveats regarding planetary strength and chart dynamics that can dilute or alter the expected royal results.
Navamsa Discrepancies
One Nadi tradition, recorded in Roots of Naadi Astrology, cautions that planets which are exalted in the birth chart (D-1) but debilitated in the Navamsa chart (D-9) cause poverty and misery. Conversely, a planet that is debilitated in the birth chart but exalted in the Navamsa indicates progressive happiness. Therefore, the Navamsa strength of the exalted planets must be verified to ensure the Raja Yoga's full manifestation.
The Atmakaraka Factor
According to the Jaimini Sutras, if the Atmakaraka planet is placed in the Lagna, it alters the standard rules of chart reading by inverting longevity predictions (where long life becomes short, short life becomes long, and middle life remains unchanged).
Variant Readings
Different classical traditions offer alternative methods for identifying Raja Yogas that do not rely solely on three exalted planets in Kendras:
- Jaimini's House Placements: The Jaimini Sutras state that Rajayogas are formed if benefic planets occupy the 2nd, 4th, 5th, or 8th house from either the lord of the Lagna or the lord of the 7th house.
- Lagnapada Configurations: The Jaimini Sutras also hold that a Rajayoga is formed if benefics occupy the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th, or 9th houses from the Lagnapada (or Paka Lagnapada or Paka Lagnapada Saptama), or if malefics occupy the 3rd or 6th houses from them.
- Lunar Aspects: A variant mentioned in An Astrobiographical Sketch of Dr BVRaman By KNRao Part1 suggests that if the Moon is aspected by many planets, an extraordinary Raja Yoga is formed.
