The Nabhasa Yoga - Vihaga (Akriti), also known as Vihaga Yoga (विहग योग), is a structural planetary configuration belonging to the Naabhasa category of yogas. Classified as a non-benefic alignment, it signifies a life marked by wandering, instability, and a lack of a settled foundation.
How It Forms
Vihaga Yoga is formed when all seven physical planets (the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn) are positioned exclusively in the 4th and the 10th houses of the horoscope. This means the entire planetary array is concentrated solely within this specific polar axis of angular (kendra) houses, leaving the remaining ten houses vacant.
In the analysis of horoscopes containing such structural alignments, the Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) tradition broadly agrees that the astrologer must prioritize the exact position of the Lagna (Ascendant) over the Moon sign. This rule is considered essential for predictive accuracy, even in cases where the Lagna is heavily afflicted. The exact cuspal positions of the twelve houses must be calculated to judge the results of the houses involved, rather than relying on the Moon sign. For structural calculations, one Nadi work defines Kendra signs strictly as the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th signs relative to a given reference point.
Classical Effects
As a non-benefic Akriti yoga, Vihaga Yoga does not confer positive or auspicious results. Instead, classical texts describe its effects through themes of restlessness, social friction, and subservience.
Wandering and Instability
The defining manifestation of Vihaga Yoga is a wandering and unstable life. The native struggles to establish a permanent home, career, or sense of peace, frequently moving or changing their life circumstances without finding a lasting anchor.
Behavioral and Social Traits
Individuals born under this configuration are traditionally described as shameless and quarrelsome. Rather than achieving positions of independent leadership or high authority, they often function in the capacity of a messenger, carrying out tasks and communications for others.
For female charts, Jataka Parijata suggests that if the Lagna is aspected by benefic planets, the native will be skilled, pure-minded, modest, handsome, and possess worthy sons and wealth, which may counteract the negative social indications of this yoga. Conversely, if both the Lagna and the Moon are in odd signs and are aspected by or associated with malefic planets, the same text warns that a female native will be masculine, insincere, ungovernable, cruel, and poor.
Profession and Wealth Indicators
Because the 10th house is one of the two active centers of this yoga, classical texts offer specific guidance on how planets situated here shape the native's destiny:
- According to Horasara, any planet occupying the 10th house from the Lagna, the Moon, or the Sun will determine both the source of wealth and the profession of the individual.
- To refine this prediction, Parashara and Phaladeepika outline a method where the astrologer identifies the strongest lord of the 10th house counted from the Lagna, the Sun, or the Moon. The lord of the Navamsha sign occupied by this strongest 10th lord is then used to pinpoint the native's profession.
- Jataka Parijata holds that if benefic planets are situated in the 10th house from the Lagna or the Moon, or if they occupy a Navamsha owned by the 10th lord, the native will be beneficent. However, if Saturn rules the Navamsha occupied by the 10th lord from the Lagna or Moon, the same text indicates a livelihood characterized by manual labor, woodwork, or punitive roles.
- Additionally, Jataka Parijata notes that if Saturn or the lord of the Lagna aspects the lord of the sign occupied by the Moon, the native may betake themselves to a religious order or mendicancy, which aligns with the wandering nature of the Vihaga configuration.
Strength and Timing
Vihaga Yoga is considered to be always strong and active. Unlike temporary planetary combinations, Nabhasa yogas of the Akriti class represent the permanent physical shape of the heavens at birth. Consequently, its core signature of instability remains constant throughout the native's life and does not depend on specific dasha periods to be activated.
Cancellation and Caveats
There are no cancellations or intensifications associated with Vihaga Yoga. Its structural pattern and its corresponding effects of wandering and instability are considered absolute once the physical criteria of the formation are met.
