The Jaimini Sutras state that if the Atmakaraka (the planet with the highest degree in the chart) is placed directly in the Lagna, the standard rules of longevity prediction must be completely inverted. Under this condition, a calculation indicating long life (Purnayu) is read as short life, a calculation indicating short life is read as long life, while a middle-life calculation remains unchanged. Additionally, if the Lagna or the 7th house is hemmed in by malefics (Papamadhyatwa), or if evil planets occupy the trines (Trikonas) from the Lagna or the 7th house, the astrologer must apply Kakshyahrasa, which represents specific deductions or additions to the native's calculated life span.
