Arishta (Challenging)

Yoga for a lean body and physical pain.

Share

Krisanga Yoga (कृशांग योग) is an Arishta (malefic) planetary combination in Vedic astrology that primarily signifies an emaciated or lean body, accompanied by physical pain and bodily discomfort. While a lean physique may be considered aesthetic in certain modern or specific contexts, the classical view categorizes this as a malefic combination due to the physical vulnerability and pain it introduces to the native's life.

How It Forms

Krisanga Yoga is formed when the Lagna Lord (the ruler of the ascendant) is placed in a dry sign or a sign owned by a dry planet. Specifically, the yoga is present when the Lagna Lord occupies any of the following dry signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, or Sagittarius.

The intensity of this yoga increases if the Navamsa Lagna (the ascendant of the D-9 divisional chart) is also owned by a dry planet. Conversely, the primary cancellation of this yoga occurs if the Lagna Lord receives an aspect from watery planets.

In analyzing this formation, the Krishnamurti Padhdhati (KP) tradition broadly agrees that the exact position of the Lagna and its cusps must always be prioritized over the Moon sign for predictive accuracy, even if the Lagna is afflicted. This principle of prioritizing the Lagna is heavily emphasized in works such as Predictive Stellar Astrology and K.P reader 3 Predictive stellar astro.

Classical Effects

The primary result of Krisanga Yoga is a highly lean, sometimes severely emaciated physical frame, alongside persistent bodily pains. The dry nature of the signs hosting the Lagna Lord deprives the physical body of the necessary moisture or robustness, leading to physical vulnerability.

Behavioral and Physical Vulnerabilities

The specific dry sign hosting the Lagna Lord or its sub-lord can further define the native's physical and psychological weaknesses. In the KP system, as outlined in K.P reader 3 Predictive stellar astro, if the sub-lord of the Ascendant is placed in the constellation of a planet occupying Aries, the native is prone to being impulsive, dogmatic, militant, and highly susceptible to sudden changes. If the sub-lord is linked to a planet in Taurus, the native tends to be stubborn, reserved, and potentially vindictive. If the sub-lord is linked to a planet in Gemini, the individual is characterized by speedy changes, a lack of persistence, and an anxious desire for quick results.

Other classical texts describe similar physical weaknesses when the Lagna or its key indicators are compromised. For instance, Bhrighu Nadi Jyotisham states that a weak constitution is also indicated when the shadow planet Ketu occupies the Lagna or a kendra (angular house) from it. Additionally, physical suffering and body pain are echoed in other classical combinations; the text yogas notes that if Jupiter is placed in the Lagna while Saturn occupies the 7th house, it forms Vatharoga Yoga, which leads to windy complaints, paralysis, and severe body pain.

Furthermore, Jataka Parijata holds that if the Lagna lord is placed in a malefic's house, occupies a duststhana (the 6th, 8th, or 12th house), and is aspected by or associated with a malignant planet, the native is bound to become obscure, compounding the physical suffering of a weak body with a lack of social recognition.

Strength and Timing

Krisanga Yoga is considered to be always active and strong once the basic conditions of its formation are met. Unlike other yogas that require specific planetary strengths to manifest, its malefic physical effects persist throughout life due to the permanent structural placement of the Lagna Lord in a dry sign.

The timing of its most acute physical manifestations—such as periods of heightened bodily pain or noticeable weight loss—typically coincides with the planetary periods (dashas and bhuktis) of the Lagna Lord, the lord of the dry sign it occupies, or any malefic planets aspecting the Lagna.

Cancellation and Caveats

The primary mitigating factor for Krisanga Yoga is the aspect of watery planets. If the Lagna Lord or the Lagna itself receives a strong aspect from watery planets (such as the Moon or Venus), the dry, emaciating influence of the yoga is canceled or significantly diluted. This aspect restores the physical moisture and vitality, preventing the body from becoming painfully thin or prone to chronic physical pain.

Variant Readings

The classical texts contrast the dry, lean effects of Krisanga Yoga with combinations that produce the opposite physical constitution. The text yogas describes Dehasthoulya Yoga, which is a combination for a stout or corpulent body. This yoga forms when the Lord of the Lagna and the planet in whose Navamsa the Lagna Lord is placed both occupy watery signs. This structural contrast reinforces the fundamental astrological principle that dry signs and dry planets restrict physical mass (resulting in Krisanga Yoga), while watery signs and watery planets expand it (resulting in Dehasthoulya Yoga).
