Daridra Yoga (Malefics in Lagna), also known in Sanskrit as Daridra Yoga (दरिद्र योग), is an Arishta (malefic) combination signifying severe poverty and material deprivation. It occurs when natural malefic planets occupy the Ascendant (Lagna) under specific conditions that prevent them from acting as supportive or protective influences. Rather than granting the typical protective shield of the first house, this placement subjects the native to a life of financial hardship, struggle, and obscurity.
How It Forms
According to the authoritative definition, Daridra Yoga forms when natural malefic planets are positioned in the Lagna. For the yoga to fully manifest, the following conditions must be met:
- Natural malefics must occupy the Lagna.
- These malefic planets must not own the 9th or 10th houses, which prevents them from obtaining beneficial Yogakaraka status.
- The malefics in the Lagna must be associated with or aspected by a Maraka lord, specifically the lord of the 2nd or 7th house.
In the technical calculation of this yoga, the Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) tradition broadly agrees that the astrologer must prioritize the exact position of the Lagna over the Moon sign. As attested in K.P reader 3 Predictive stellar astro and Predictive Stellar Astrology, predictions must always rely on the exact position of the Lagna and its twelve cusps rather than the Moon sign, regardless of whether the Lagna is heavily afflicted by malefic planets.

The primary consequence of Daridra Yoga is poverty, with no positive effects attributed to its formation. Classical and Nadi texts describe various dimensions of hardship, physical weakness, and social obscurity associated with this placement.
Poverty and Social Obscurity
The classical text Jataka Parijata states that if several malefics are situated in the Lagna, the native will be unhappy from the first to the last moments of life. Furthermore, a Nadi tradition recorded in Roots of Naadi Astrology notes that when planets are exalted in the birth chart (D-1) but debilitated in the Navamsa chart (D-9), they cause poverty and misery, which intensifies the financial distress of the yoga. Jataka Parijata also holds that if the Lagna lord is placed in a malefic's house, occupies a duststhāna (the 6th, 8th, or 12th house), and is aspected by or associated with a malignant planet, the native is destined to become obscure.
Physical and Behavioral Afflictions

According to general principles in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, if a debilitated planet is placed in a Kendra (angular) or Trikona (trinal) house and its debility is canceled, it produces a Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga, which brings status and success during its periods and sub-periods. Similarly, Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra indicates that a debilitated planet can produce a Raja Yoga in its Dasha or Bhukti if it rules or occupies the 3rd or 6th house, or if the Lagna lord is exalted, in its own sign, or aspects the Lagna. Furthermore, Parashara principles state that if the 10th lord (a Kendra lord) aspects the 1st lord (a Trikona lord), it forms a highly successful and fame-giving combination that can counteract the obscurity of an afflicted Lagna.
Cancellation and Caveats
The primary cancellation of Daridra Yoga occurs if the malefic planet in the Lagna attains Yogakaraka status by owning the 9th or 10th houses, which nullifies the poverty-inducing effects of the yoga.
Additionally, classical and Parashari texts outline several conditions where malefic or debilitated placements are neutralized or transformed into positive yogas:
- According to Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, if a debilitated planet is in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house, a Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga is formed, provided the Lagna lord is strong, exalted, or in its own sign.
- Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra also states that if a debilitated planet's dispositor is placed in a Kendra or Trikona, or if a debilitated planet is conjoined with an exalted planet, the debility is canceled, forming a Raja Yoga.
- In the Jaimini system, as recorded in the Jaimini Sutras, a form of Raja Yoga is indicated if benefics occupy the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th, or 9th houses from the Lagnapada (or Paka Lagnapada), or if malefics are restricted to the 3rd or 6th houses from these points, which can help alleviate the poverty otherwise promised by malefics in the Lagna.
