Three koots on their own
Gana, yoni and nadi are three of the eight koots in Ashtakuta matching, and between them they carry eighteen of the thirty-six points. They are separated out here because they are the three people most often ask about by name.
What each measures
Gana sorts the twenty-seven nakshatras into deva, manushya and rakshasa temperaments and is worth six points. Yoni assigns each nakshatra an animal and reads sexual and instinctive compatibility, worth four. Nadi, worth eight, is the most heavily weighted koot in the whole system.
Nadi dosha
When both people share the same nadi the koot scores zero, and the condition is called nadi dosha. It is the single most common reason an otherwise strong match falls below the usual threshold. Classical exceptions exist — the same nakshatra with different padas, or a shared rashi with different nakshatras — and are worth checking before treating the match as failed.
Common questions
What is nadi dosha?
Both people sharing the same nadi, which scores zero out of the eight points nadi carries. It is the most common reason a match falls below the usual threshold.
Can nadi dosha be cancelled?
The classical texts allow exceptions, including the same nakshatra with different padas and the same rashi with different nakshatras. They are worth checking before treating a match as failed.
How many points are these three worth?
Eighteen of the thirty-six: gana six, yoni four and nadi eight — half the total score between them.
