Houses (Bhavas) - The 12 Life Areas

Basic • 30 minutes

🏠 What are Houses (Bhavas)?

Houses divide your birth chart into 12 sections, each representing different areas of life. Think of them as 12 different "departments" of your life!

💡 Simple Analogy:

Imagine your life as a company with 12 departments. House 1 = HR (yourself), House 2 = Finance (wealth), House 7 = Partnerships (marriage), etc. Planets in each house influence that area of your life!

The 12 Houses

House 1: Lagna (Ascendant)

Self, personality, physical appearance, health

House 2: Dhan (Wealth)

Money, family, speech, food, possessions

House 3: Sahaj (Siblings)

Siblings, courage, communication, short journeys

House 4: Sukh (Home)

Mother, home, education, property, vehicles

House 5: Putra (Children)

Children, creativity, education, speculation, romance

House 6: Ari (Enemies)

House 7: Kalatra (Spouse)

Marriage, partnerships, spouse, business partners

House 8: Mrityu (Death)

House 9: Dharma (Religion)

House 10: Karma (Career)

House 11: Labh (Gains)

House 12: Vyaya (Losses)

Losses, expenses, liberation, foreign lands, spirituality

📐 House Systems - How Houses are Divided

There are different ways to divide the chart into 12 houses. The most common in Vedic astrology is Whole Sign (Rashi) system.

1. Whole Sign (Rashi) System

Simplest and most common: Each sign = one house. House 1 = Ascendant sign, House 2 = next sign, etc.

Example: If Ascendant is Leo (sign 4), then:
House 1 = Leo, House 2 = Virgo, House 3 = Libra, ... House 7 = Aquarius

2. Placidus System

Used in KP astrology: Houses are unequal sizes based on time divisions. More accurate for timing predictions.

3. Sripati System

Similar to Placidus but with different calculation method. Used in some Vedic traditions.

🎯 How Planets are Assigned to Houses

A planet is in a house if its longitude falls within that house's boundaries.

📐 Whole Sign System Formula:

House Number = ((Planet Sign - Ascendant Sign) % 12) + 1

% = modulo (remainder after division)
Sign numbers: 0=Aries, 1=Taurus, ..., 11=Pisces

Example:

Given: Ascendant = Leo (sign 4), Sun = Aquarius (sign 10)

House = ((10 - 4) % 12) + 1 = (6 % 12) + 1 = 6 + 1 = 7

Result: Sun is in House 7 (Spouse/Partnerships house)

⚠️ Important:

The house system matters! A planet might be in House 5 in Whole Sign but House 6 in Placidus. Always specify which house system you're using!

📝 Key Takeaways

  • 12 houses represent 12 different areas of life
  • House 1 = Ascendant sign (most important!)
  • Whole Sign system: Each sign = one house (simplest)
  • House = ((Planet Sign - Ascendant Sign) % 12) + 1
  • Planets in houses influence those life areas
