Swollen Gums
Description
In Ayurveda, swollen gums, or Danta Mamsa Shotha, signify an imbalance of the Kapha and Pitta doshas, often aggravated by poor oral hygiene, improper diet, or an increase in Ama (toxins). The condition reflects inflammation in the gums and can lead to bleeding, discomfort, and susceptibility to infections if untreated. Ayurveda emphasizes that healthy gums are essential for overall dental and digestive health.
Causes
- Kapha and Pitta Imbalance:
- Excess Kapha causes swelling and heaviness, while aggravated Pitta causes redness and inflammation.
- Accumulation of Ama (Toxins):
- Poor digestion and lifestyle habits lead to toxin buildup, which settles in oral tissues.
- Improper Diet:
- Consumption of too much spicy, sour, or junk food aggravates Pitta and impacts gum health.
- Poor Oral Hygiene:
- Irregular brushing, neglecting tongue cleaning, and lack of regular mouth rinsing increase the risk of infections.
- Vitamin Deficiency:
- Deficiencies in vitamins like C and D can contribute to gum weakness and inflammation.
