Shortness of Breath
Description
Ayurvedic Description: In Ayurveda, shortness of breath or "Swasa Roga" is associated primarily with an imbalance in the Vata and Kapha doshas. Vata, which governs movement and airflow, can become aggravated, leading to difficulty in breathing. Kapha imbalance can lead to congestion and mucus buildup, further obstructing airflow. According to Ayurvedic principles, shortness of breath can arise due to lifestyle factors, stress, diet, and environmental influences that disrupt the balance of these doshas.
Causes
- Aggravated Vata Dosha – Excessive movement, stress, irregular routines, and dryness can disturb airflow and cause shallow or rapid breathing.
- Imbalanced Kapha Dosha – Excess mucus, congestion, and sluggishness block the respiratory channels.
- Poor Digestion (Agni) – Weak digestion can lead to toxins (Ama) buildup, which may obstruct the respiratory system.
- Accumulated Toxins – Dietary choices and lifestyle habits contribute to the accumulation of Ama, causing respiratory issues.
- Dietary Factors – Excessive intake of cold, heavy, oily foods can aggravate Kapha and lead to mucus production.
- Respiratory Causes: Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, pulmonary embolism.
- Cardiac Causes: Heart failure, arrhythmia, coronary artery disease.
- Other Health Conditions: Anemia, obesity, panic attacks, acid reflux.
- Environmental Triggers: High altitudes, poor air quality, extreme temperatures.
