Sensitivity to Cold
Description
Sensitivity to cold, or feeling excessively cold even in normal temperatures, can indicate underlying issues related to circulation, metabolism, or body composition. In Ayurveda, it is often associated with an imbalance in the Vata or Kapha doshas, which can cause coldness, poor circulation, and lowered digestive fire (Agni). This sensitivity may also stem from conditions that affect blood flow, thyroid function, or energy levels. Addressing these causes can help restore warmth, comfort, and balance to the body.
Causes
- Vata and Kapha Imbalance – Vata’s cold and dry nature or Kapha’s sluggishness can lead to poor circulation and an increased sensitivity to cold.
- Low Agni (Digestive Fire) – Weak digestive fire results in insufficient heat production, which can increase cold sensitivity.
- Poor Circulation – Reduced blood flow, especially in extremities, can make certain parts of the body feel cold.
- Nutritional Deficiencies – Deficiencies in iron, vitamin B12, or other nutrients can cause cold sensitivity due to inadequate red blood cell production or metabolism issues.
- Hypothyroidism – An underactive thyroid can slow metabolism, reducing heat production and causing cold intolerance.
- Low Body Fat or Muscle Mass – People with low body fat or muscle mass may struggle to retain heat, increasing sensitivity to cold.
