Cracked Heels (Padadari)

Cracked Heels (Padadari)
Description

Cracked heels, known as Padadari in Ayurveda, are often due to imbalances in the Vata dosha, which governs dryness and roughness in the body. This condition typically occurs when the skin on the heels loses moisture and elasticity, leading to dryness, fissures, and sometimes pain. Cracked heels can be influenced by exposure to harsh weather, improper footwear, and lack of hydration. Ayurveda views this as a sign of Vata aggravation, worsened by inadequate skin care or prolonged standing. Treatment focuses on moisturizing, softening the skin, and balancing Vata.

Causes

  • Vata Imbalance:
    • Vata dominance in the body can lead to excessive dryness, roughness, and cracking of the skin, especially on the feet.
  • Dehydration:
    • Insufficient fluid intake can result in dry skin, increasing the likelihood of cracked heels.
  • Lack of Proper Foot Care:
    • Neglecting foot care routines like regular cleansing, moisturizing, and wearing supportive footwear can exacerbate heel dryness.
  • Environmental Factors:
    • Exposure to cold, dry weather or walking barefoot on rough surfaces aggravates Vata, contributing to cracked heels.
  • Prolonged Standing or Walking on Hard Surfaces:
    • These actions exert pressure on the heels, causing fissures and deep cracks over time.

Treament

  • Dietary Recommendations:

    • Consume Vata-pacifying foods such as warm, nourishing soups, ghee, and oils to maintain internal hydration.
    • Include foods rich in healthy fats like nuts, seeds, and avocados, which help moisturize the skin from within.
  • Herbal and Natural Remedies:

    • Coconut Oil: Apply warm coconut oil on the heels to moisturize and soften the skin, ideally before bedtime.
    • Aloe Vera Gel: Known for its cooling and moisturizing properties, aloe vera can help heal cracks and soothe inflammation.
    • Turmeric and Neem Paste: This combination has antimicrobial properties, which can prevent infections in deep cracks.
  • Lifestyle and Foot Care Practices:

    • Soak the feet in warm water mixed with rock salt and a few drops of oil for 15 minutes to soften rough skin.
    • Exfoliate gently with a pumice stone to remove dead skin before applying a moisturizing foot cream or oil.
    • Wear closed, supportive footwear to minimize dryness and protect heels from rough surfaces.
  • Panchakarma Therapy:

    • Abhyanga (oil massage) with warming oils like sesame oil helps reduce Vata and provides deep hydration, preventing further heel cracking.
    • Regular Padabhyanga (foot massage) with medicated oils can significantly improve skin health and reduce dryness.
