Oil Gargling (Gandusha)
Dinacharya
Description: Oil gargling, known as Gandusha in Ayurveda, is a practice of holding and swishing oil in the mouth to cleanse, strengthen, and detoxify the oral cavity. Traditionally performed in the morning as part of the daily routine (Dinacharya), this practice not only promotes oral health but is also believed to benefit the entire digestive system and help maintain doshic balance. Sesame oil, coconut oil, or ghee are commonly used oils, selected according to one's dosha.
Method:
-
Choose the Right Oil:
- Sesame oil: Ideal for Vata dosha due to its warming and nourishing properties.
- Coconut oil: Cooling, making it suitable for Pitta dosha.
- Ghee: Beneficial for Kapha dosha, providing moisture without aggravating mucus.
-
Procedure:
- Take a tablespoon of oil and hold it in the mouth for 5–10 minutes, swishing gently.
- Ensure the oil reaches all areas of the mouth, moving it between the teeth and across the gums.
- Spit out the oil once it feels thinner, ideally without swallowing, as it collects toxins from the mouth.
-
Follow-Up:
- After gargling, rinse the mouth with warm water and brush the teeth to remove any residue.
