Abhyanga, the practice of oil massage, is a fundamental part of Ayurvedic daily routine (Dinacharya). It is recommended to perform this practice daily for optimal health benefits. Here are detailed guidelines for proper application:

  1. Choosing the Right Oil:

    • Select an appropriate oil based on your dosha (body constitution). Common choices include sesame oil for Vata, coconut oil for Pitta, and mustard oil for Kapha. You can also use medicated oils tailored to specific health conditions.
  2. Timing:

    • The best time to perform Abhyanga is in the morning, before bathing. This allows the oil to penetrate the skin and provides nourishment throughout the day.
  3. Preparation:

    • Warm the oil slightly before application, as warm oil penetrates the skin more effectively. You can do this by placing the oil container in a bowl of hot water.
  4. Application Technique:

    • Begin with the Head: Start by massaging the scalp with oil using circular motions, as this promotes mental clarity and strengthens hair roots.
    • Work Downward: Gradually move to the face, neck, arms, and legs, using long strokes along the limbs and circular motions on joints. Use gentle pressure, especially on sensitive areas.
    • Focus on Specific Areas: Spend extra time on areas that feel tense or sore, allowing the oil to relax the muscles and tissues.
  5. Finishing the Massage:

    • After the massage, allow the oil to remain on the skin for at least 15-30 minutes. This enhances absorption and maximizes benefits.
    • Follow with a warm bath or shower to cleanse the skin of excess oil while retaining the nourishing effects.

    • Abhyanga (oil massage) should be avoided by:

      • Patients with a recent fever (Navajwara).
      • Individuals with indigestion (Ajeerna).
